Buying a 944 advice please

Looking at a 944 today for a mate.

1989 2.7 73,000 miles

Neither of us know anything about them so apart from the usual car checks, what do we look for and What's their weak points ?

I think in the main corrosion can be a problem, especially in the sills & bottom of front wheel arches.

check the buyers guide on the pcgb forums

but in short, apart from the usual - does it drive well, run well & is it tidy...

1. Rust - sills from the inside out (cameraphone down the black vent in the rear door pillar is good), rear suspension front mounts. Brake & fuel lines also rust.

2. Clutch - expensive job

3. Cam & balance belts / waterpump - saves money if done recently (£4-800 job)

If there's a Porsche indy nearby book it in for a look over, well worth £50 or so for a informed check. Buyers guides are fine but some punters think sub £1000 944's should still tick every box .

Hi,

It's all about the sills... Just had mine done, got a good deal, but not cheap.

It's the cam belt and chain snapping that kills 944s so if you are in any doubt get them changed. From memory the belt is 30k miles or 5 years, whichever sooner. The chain is every 80k I think ( worth a check).

Reject any series two car which has sill covers, especially the boxy ones which were only every offered on series one cars. Theyre always fitted for a reason and it is never to make the cars look better.
