How high does the body need to go?
Discussion
Will be doing a body off on my Chimaera this winter, just at the planning stage at the moment, working out exactly how i will be lifting the body from the chassis and if i can do it in my garage or will need to do it on the drive. The problem that i have in the garage is that the door opens into the garage and reduces the available height considerably. So can anyone tell me how high the body needs to be lifted to clear the chassis/engine please?
Cheers Paul.
Cheers Paul.
If you are going to do it with the engine in then the underside of the front valance will need to lift higher than the top of the engine. Add a bit for the fact the chassis + engine will lift a little when the body weight comes off. If you are restricted on height then remove the engine first then you will only need to lift the distance from floor to tunnel top.

From memory, the plenum chamber is the highest point that the body has to clear.
You could always let the air out of the tyres to get some extra overall headroom!
Re your planning: here's a guide I prepared earlier (actually a few years ago now) http://autogasp.com/TVR.php that'll take you through what you need to do.

How heavy is the body by itself? Possible to lift with a few people?
It may be fibreglass but believe me its heavy. I jacked mine up front and back and then rolled the chassis out from underneath. If you are going to lift using manpower you are going to need a fair few hands. I think a minimum of 6 to lift and someone looking for clearance issues underneath. I`d jack it and then roll the chassis. carsy said:

Thanks for that. I appreciate that these things can be deceiving. However, for a partial lift, I hare you can do about 3" with the radiator in. Would removing the radiator allow you to raise slightly higher? What if you removed the engine?Chuffmeister said:

I did mine in my single garage I would suggest you do it in your garage if you can unless you plan to be working on it in the rain and snow!

I put the car up on axle stands using the backbone rails; then used a trolley jack to lift it an inch or so at each corner and then held it with some wood packing while i moved round each corner of the car.

If you just want to do the 2" lift I did a write up for the Griff, it's also in an old copy of Sprint magazine.
