997 turbo not starting

Hi,
I had a low battery last week so have had my car on trickle charge and it now reads fully charged. However, when I put the key in, all the dash lights come on but when I turn the key everything goes dead. I then have to pick the lock to get the key out. When I put the trickle charger back on it reads Charging.
Have I lost the starter motor or simply a dead battery? Any help would be appreciated.

Check whether the lights go on or not, if not, or they die rapidly, then bad battery.
Check the obvious too, you have tightened the battery terminals haven't you? Assuming you may have disconnected the battery... The behaviour you describe is typical of a bad connection, enough to light up the dash but when you want some real juice the resultant spark's burn insulates the meagre contact.
A cheap voltmeter will at least give an indication if any cells are dead.
Another, it's possibly difficult to charge the battery with it connected, for some reason on the 996 at least the car does not seem to go to sleep with the charger connected and the charger never goes to fully charged.
Unless you know the battery is definitely kaput I would disconnect, charge, reconnect and have another go.

Another development...I charged the battery overnight, disconnected the neg terminal to reset it and then connected to a donor car aswell. Car ticked and all the lights flashed but still no sign of a spark. Me thinks the battery must be knackered still OR starter motor problem.
Any further thoughts?
New battery should be with me next week so I will wait until I have tried this before a visit to see Nick at Auto 2000 Bedford with my RAC warranty in hand.
Gutted, such a great driving weekend as well.

Yes, wait for the new battery. A bad battery can supply enough juice to light the lights, but not enough to power the starter solenoid which must be powered fully to close a switch to enable the starter.Any further thoughts?

When you have a known good battery in the car then you can use it to determiner if there is a starter problem or something else going on.

So you jumpered it but no luck?If so then it's a bad connection. Usually a poor earth, or anything wrong with the terminals.
If the starter, the dash lights and everything else would work fine.
