Driving a kitcar without being in possession of the V5
Discussion
4 weeks ago i sent off my paper work to get the Exocet registered after passing the IVA. I had all the usual nonsense off the DVLA regarding them not doing anything until 10 days has passed etc. However, after my last phone call they told me that the car had now been assigned a registration number and they were in the process of sending all the stuff back to (V5 & VEL). This still hasnt arrived and it's gone passed the point of frustration.
Soooooo my question is whats the worst that could happen if i chose to drive the car now? There's number plates on it (the reg number that the DVLA confirmed over the phone) and its insured on that plate. All thats missing is a tax disc (which i paid for 4 weeks ago) and me actually being in possession of the V5.

So how did you get plates for it if they haven't sent the paperwork? When I registered my kit, and after several weeks waiting and having to produce yet another insurance cover note they sent a form V948 which gave the supplier authority to make the plates.Soooooo my question is whats the worst that could happen if i chose to drive the car now? There are ways around this, He may already own the plates having had the number on a previous vehicle and then on retention.Or, like me, he could have a license to supply plates in which case he can do whatever he likes

Since sending off the paper work (after the initial 'dont bother us until 10 days have passed) i've been phoning them constantly. Then during one phone call they explained that a reg number had been assigned to the car and that the paperwork (V5, tax) was in the process of being sent out. They confirmed the reg number over the phone. With me being the impatient sort and not having much time off work i really wanted to drive it last weekend but was yet to receive the paper work (hence my original question). As for getting number plates without a V948 (or similar) its easy. There are numerous websites and Ebay sellers that sell fully legal plates (correct spacing, BS mark, makers postcode etc) without asking for evidence of onwership.

I know plates are available for 'show' purposes, but I'm surprised they are willing to put their postcode and id on them as well without seeing docs, as I understand the penalties are severe, and they are audited regularly. Maybe check were more strict when the rules were first introduced (must be about 10 years ago?) As for getting number plates without a V948 (or similar) its easy.
