Help! My new (to me) Boxster woes continue...

To recap I've only had the car since Friday night and it has since become apparent that it needs a gearbox rebuild.

But this appears to be a new issue so thought I'd start a new thread. I took it for a gentle drive this afternoon (avoiding second gear!), and a warning message came up 'check engine drive to workshop'.

I was only a couple of miles from home so took it back there. Nothing appeared to be wrong to me.

Any ideas? Right now I'm feeling like this car is the worst purchase of my life!

There are specialists local to me, but I was planning to send the car to sports and classic to get the gearbox work done which is 2-3 hours drive away!

I suppose I could get the car sent there on a flat bed truck, but that sounds expensive! Maybe I'd be better visiting a local specialist to have a look at just this new engine problem?

If only I had a time machine... I love the car, but feel like it has the potential to financially ruin me!

Probably just a sensor. My old Boxster was throwing these up every now and then.

Thanks - I did watch that twice before buying the car. My box is manual though unfortunately. Don't recall any sensor problems on that show.

If in the AA/RAC get it lifted to us and we can diagnose/repair it.

A classic illustration why a ppi is vital unless you know what you're doing.

Love the 'in-place' disk skimmer!
The disks are notorious for corroding over the years.

Miike, do you have one of these or is the potential liability not worth it?

I'm guessing I shouldn't drive it until that fault has been diagnosed?!

It has happened to me before, as others have said, it is probably just the computer that needs a reset/hammer.

I would not drive the car anywhere and get it picked up. Most garages will pick the car up for you as part of the service.

Crikey, you're not getting much luck with that car. Sounds like the seller knew that the car had a few problems before passing it off.

Hope you get it sorted & it doesn't hit your wallet too hard.

The sensor may end up being the MAF, mass airflow sensor. A diagnostic will show this immediately. It's a bosch part actually takes 5 mins to fit a new one so be careful if it turns out to be this and someone quotes an hours labour! And don't be tempted by cheaper versions, they work great for... 5 minutes.

Unless you are prepared to get your hands dirty do as the warning says. Drive to a workshop. The car could just be do for some service.

If the check engine light is on and not flashing and the engine is not showing any signs of distress you can drive the car to the workshop.

Odds the problem is not severe could be just time for an oil/filter service or a gas cap is loose.

The key word is "good". While there are many second hand gearboxes available not every 2nd hand gearbox is a good one. If one does go the 2nd hand gearbox route he needs to deal with a Porsche salvage business that will offer to take the tranny back in exchange should it prove to be at least out of the box (so to speak) bad.
