Ok so I have been thinking about buying one for a few years, thing is I have found a very nice one and it works well for transporting the family.

But....is the mpg really as bad as I have read? I know this is probably the biggest issue with these cars but how big an issue is it?

I'm not sure if it is an itch I must scratch or should I be considering something else; ideally I want 4 doors and something a bit different which the M5 ticks the boxes for. The car has AUC warranty and an excellent service history.

Help please!

Yes, the MPG is bad. How bad obviously depends on where and how you drive. I got about 6.5 km/l over 10000 km and coupled with the small fuel tank (it is meant to hold 70 litres but never got more than 63 in it) my range was less than 400 km, and this was cruising at 160 kph.

If you stick to the speed limit you may be able to squeeze 20-22 mpg out of it, but what's the point of getting an M5 then when you would be better served with a 530/535d?

If it is a daily driver/only car, the fuel economy may get tiring and if you have any doubts about the feasibility of the project already now, I am not sure it will be happy ownership.

Just to add: with the same driving, my E39 M5 returned 7.5-8 km/l and a range of about 520 km, thus cutting off at least 100 km range with the E60.

I kept the E39 5 years, the E60 8 months.

Hang on, last week it was an M6...

And previously a Z4

And previously a 996 C4S, 997 (or Boxster)

And previously a JWC Coupe

And previously a 90 hard top

And previously a Mini Cooper s

And previously a M3 LE500 DCT convertible or coupe

Blimey, the list goes on..... (That's all I can be bothered to list)

Errrrrrm, Make you mind up!

Av. 14.4 mpg, the way I look at it if you want one buy one, if your worried about mpg, by the sounds of it you are, then buy a 535 or similar.

I averaged about 12.5 mpg over 8 months and it being used as my daily driver, don't regret it a single bit as it was an amazing machine to drive IMO!

That V10 is glorious!

M6 average 14.5 over 3+ years. It's not the MPG it's the range of the tank that's the real issue. Expect 200 miles between fill-ups.

I must be driving mine like a right pussy...averaging 18mpg around town and 28mpg on the motorway Leeds to Derby last week! If you're concerned about the mpg then as previous poster quotes you will fall out of love with it soon! My RS4 B5 averaged 22mpg combined and I knew I would get nothing like this, but so far I am quite pleased, however, the car is worth it even if returning a whole lot less! I love it!!

I am looking to get two new cars, depending on what the first car is influences the second. I'm looking to spend circa 50k so yes I am indecisive. It's a big decision and I want to get it right.

I think you should change your username to something more relevant - GroanGroanGroan maybe? Miserable git. - who pee'd on your chips"

Thanks for the reply thumbup

What I don't understand is you are happy to blow £100k on a Ferrari.....

Has anyone else been watching these? I was shocked to see a couple at the 155-160 mark - the £155k one is at a main dealer- whoever gave that to them must have been completely stuffed over - ie I'm thinking they would only have got 135-140 for it? That is some awesome depreciation for 2012 registered car.

It's good for me though as I have promised myself one when they hit 100k - 18months to 2yrs away????
Yet you are asking about MPG on a car everyone knows puts you on first name terms with the local Esso garage confused and you yourself quoted on another thread only a week or so ago....

I've seen a nice M6 at a main dealer that looks like it has been well cared for but it has had 5 owners which concerns me a little.

I've read about lots of horror stories about potential big bills etc but should I still worry if it comes with a years AUC warranty, decent tyres and a recent service?

I know the mpg is poor and RFL is high but it will only be used for approximately 2-3k miles a year.

What else should I consider?
GroanGroanGroan, not me biggrin

I'm just looking forward to (eventually) seeing what you buy yes

i've averaged 18mpg in 20k... trick is to let the engine rev and change at 3-4k min rather than let it labour at around 2k which then gives poor economy ime.

whatever way you look at it though, its a thirsty beast and after 2 years ownership I wont be selling anytime soon, as a family car and motorway muncher it suits my needs perfectly.

I average 18ish through mixed conditions. Had mine 17 months but only done about 9000 miles, absolutely love it and no intention of getting rid.

I have has mine for 2 years and the OBC is showing 19.8mpg. Some SE London driving, some trips to Germany smile and some hoons to North Wales/ Norfolk. You should do it... And don't bother with the E39... It is amazing, but it does not stir the soul... The V10 and SMG bring the latent idiot in me every time I thumb the Engine Start Button...

Do it that's all I have to say.

On the mpg front when I first got mine I used to get 12-13 mph with what I would call normal driving, then after about 1000 miles of ownership it through a dsc fault.

Got that looked at straight away and was the throttle actuator on bank 1. That was replaced and then with the same driving style it does 18-19 mpg so that is about the level of normal driving.

I don't think that's bad and then if you want to push it it obviously drops but the sound of the v10 makes up for it.

It was a great car until I had the exhaust changed and now it's almost perfect for what I want. A genuine supercar underneath and a family saloon on top.

Also don't let gearbox comments put you off, if the box is working right and you change correctly in normal use then it is great and when pushing it feels involving.

I average around 12-14mpg from mine.

For a car that is nearly 2 tonnes fully loaded, with a 5L v10 and 500hp I wouldn't say it has bad economy. But if you want "good" economy and can't face a £90 bill every 180-200 miles look elsewhere.
