Hi all,

I'm still in the process of backing up a 255GB aperture managed library to an 'aperture vault' on my NAS over a hard wired connection. So far it's taken more than 24hours and it's still going!!!

It's a non gigabit router, but even so it's taking the p*** a bit.

iStat is showing data transfer rates of no more than 2MB/s and there is a lot of burst activity. i.e lots of peaks and troughs in the data rate.

usually when i copy a large movie file i get continuous sustained 8-10MB/s

does aperture do something strange during it's vault backup? i can't believe it's taken so long. My first TimeMachine backup over USB2 only took about 10 hours to transfer 550GB of data.

This is half the data and over twice the time.

Any ideas as to shy it's taking so long?

Well as a simple data transfer comparison I can move about 5Gb of data over USB2 from CF card to HD in about 8 minutes. So 255Gb would be about 7 hours.

God knows what Aperture is doing; all my software is simple smile

If it's hard wired what is the router for?

Nas ------ router ----- MacBook.

I don't know what aperture was doing. But looking at the data transfer rates there were relatively large period of inactivity with short spikes of data bursts.

It's a lot odd. But at least now it's done and I have another backup of my photos.

The next incremental ones should be fine to run overnight I hope.
