On a relatively heavy Aluminium frame (Carrera TDF).

I've been offered some new ones for £100... they wont help much on weight but I've heard they definitely help ride comfort?

I'm tempted by shiny toys, but don't want to waste the cash on an upgrade that will make a marginal difference...

Personally I would add that £100 to a new bike fund somewhere down the line and keep with what you have. If you want a bit of added comfort, try going from a 23 to a 25mm tyre (if you haven't already)

New bike is next year, having been talked out of a Dura-ace Eddie Mercx in the sales...

Frustrating as the recommended upgrades for that seem to be "buy a new bike". New tyres have already transformed the ride - I guess that's where it stops.

Thats 1/3 of the way towards one of the decent (red) triban 3s, that come with carbon forks and weigh over a kilo less than the tdf smile

It's nearly 1/3 of the way to a carbon frame and forks from Planet-X or the terrific ongoing Scott offer...transfer-over the bits from the TdF and then upgrade piece-by-piece in slow time.

By the time you've fitted a new fork to that you've spent its secondhand value. It's a perfectly serviceable basic bike but I would contend there are no bikes for under £1k that its worth upgrading the fork on from the one it came with.
