If I was to guess, I'd say one of your bolts that connect the driveshaft to the diff has come loose

Well, that's me out of ideas!

Brake clatter?
Buggered diff?

Does it happen in time with wheel rotation?

I had this once, and it was just that, the rear wheel fell off...

But, it was the driveshaft that snapped...sheared straight off, where shaft entered the axle...

Bllody scarey, I was only doing 5 mph, but 15 mins before I was doing 140 mph...

Mind you, it was in a an old 2.8i Capri limited editon, and some years ago now, say 12 years ago now...

I had something similar to that once. Turned out some bu99er had tried to nick my wheels and only my lock nut was tight. The other four were about to fall off.

Check the CV joint on the outer end of the halfshaft.

Get someone to rotate the wheel while you keep your hand on the joint.

With you on this one old chap, I have experienced this twice - Once was a loose wheel on an old MGB, the other was exactly the same on a chum's chimp. 4 of 5 nuts only finger tight!! Check all your wheels are secure - I hope this solves it.

Check the rear suspension mountings just behind the rear wheels - there's a particular linkage that is prone to fracture and sounds exactly like the noise you are talking about. Usually a weld has snapped off and can be repaired, but i would go for replacement as my old Cerb suffered this twice. Particularly noisy over uneven road surfaces.
