E63 or E63 S ?
Discussion
term of my current agility deal ('11 6.2 E63 estate) expires end '12 - buy out price looks high, so given the current deals on offer might work out more cost effective just to get another new E63. my question is whether it's worth going for the 585hp S model (extra £10k, but u get the slippy diff included which a 2.5k option that i would spec on the basic car anyway, so actually it's extra £7.5k to me). has anyone driven an S ?

I haven't driven the S but I have a new E63, albeit without the Diff. If you're in London and fancy a look at my car let me know. I ordered mine without seeing it, let alone going out in one. I have had my E63 for a week. The power is sensational. I imagine the 'S' is just stupid fast. Would I pay £10k extra?, not in a million years, I am not a good enough driver to use the near 560BHP I have now.
I cannot imagine anyone would drive the latest E63 and say "great motor, but it could do with a bit more power"!

Presume you mean your deal expires end '13?
Biggest issue for you is going to be getting an estate in time. End of the year is only 4 months away. Would be surprised if a spec-able car could be delivered by then. Especially the newer S model.
Regarding which to go for, sounds like you've already made up your mind :-)
Have you driven a 5.5 Biturbo car? Think you will be surprised at how different the engine feels to the 6.3. Im not sure I like it as much, if I'm honest. I'm definitely missing the diff from my old car as well.

hmmmm, maybe i should keep the current one then - only done 18,000 miles and very high spec, with diff, extended leather etc...and that 6.2 lump is heroic. not sure what to do !YES

I can't comment on the diff but from the discussions I had, adding the diff to my car added a lot on to the leasing costs. Isn't it standard on the E63S?

I concur with Jackwood, the 5.5 is not as good as the 6.2, particularly in terms of power delivery and throttle response. The 5.5 is still very good but if you've had the 6.2 before, you can't help but be slightly disappointed. The noise in the 5.5 is extraordinary but not as visceral as the 6.2, tunnels just aren't the same.

it's standard on the S yes, £2,580 option on standard E63. sounds like i need to drive a bi-turbo before making the plunge. doesn't surprise me though, the 6.2 normally aspirated V8 is a masterpiece. 5.5 turbo was always going to be less special. price of progress in efficiency/emissions etc....I can't comment on the diff but from the discussions I had, adding the diff to my car added a lot on to the leasing costs. They added the cost of the diff (and the 360 camera) to the balloon payment - which I will very likely not be taking up - in terms of deposit and monthly it cost nothing extra. I think a good broker can negotiate a decent deal. Ended up with a few pounds off of the quoted monthly price too. The quote on the S was something like 400/month extra so I didn't follow it up too closely.seawise said:
tnks all - waiting for a couple of stealers to get back to me with quotes on standard car and S - i appreciate that 557hp sounds sufficient, but 585hp strikes me as a nicer number...
I'm keen to hear what offers you get, its M5 or e63 for us and not too bothered on which, just what we can get for the most attractive deal. might be able to do a group buy

I haven't had the 6.2 but I do have the 5.5. It is a stunning motor and whilst it may not sound as good as the 6.2 (some may say), it is proven to be superior in any performance test which is good enough for me. I am certainly happy that I have the 5.5 bi-turbo!I can't comment on the diff but from the discussions I had, adding the diff to my car added a lot on to the leasing costs. Seems we're not the only ones to lament the throttle response of the new 5.5:
'Although to be superseded by the M157 5.5 L V8 BiTurbo (see below) for full-sized models such as the S-Class, the M156 will remain in production as its more precise throttle response is still well suited to smaller sportier models such as the C-Class.' (Wikipedia - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-AMG).
If you've driven both, it's extremely clear that the new engine is not as exciting as the 6.2 and while I love the rumble at lower engine speeds, the top end lacks the drama of the old engine.
As someone else said, this is more about alleged efficiency (I find the difference very small actually) and emissions rather than creating a superior engine. The 5.5 might be more powerful but it's less enjoyable.

This was on another forum, hope they don't mind me posting it here.....
Well i'v got a W211 E63 and had a W212 E63 5.5tt earlier this week so from my limited experience as it was only 2 day's i had the car and wanted to get the feel overall.
Engine wise the 5.5tt has much more instant power than the 6.2 v8, i love the blip on upshifts and rev match on downshifts. I nearly dropped one the first time i floored it on the ramp joining the motorway.
In AMG mode i find the car a bit on an animal but it sounds amazing, the throttle response is very sensitive and the ride obviously is a bit harsh but nothing i couldn't handle.
Speaking to one of the guys i was dealing with in Mercedes, it's engineered to makes the noise unlike the M156 which is more natural.

Erm, well I have to disagree here. The new 5.5 is utterly stonking. I'm not sure which car you've tried it in, but in my SL63 (god knows why they stick with the silly naming conventions SL55 would have been fine!) it's just an animal, smashes the red line, hammers in the gearchange. It's proper neck snapping power and nasty sounding V8 roar. Not to mention these are now being remapped (no major hardware change) to over 700 HP and 800+ ft/lb torque. You just can't do that with the naturally aspirated engine. Big appeal for me once I work out how to handle what I've already got!
I do agree that there is a very slight throttle response penalty, but that is the same with any turbo engine. For the increase in sheer oomph when you do get that pedal planted I'd say it's well worth the trade off. Got to keep in mind that most of these cars are not hardcore sportscars they are big powerful GT cars. Suits the character IMO.
I agree they should keep the NA engine in things like the SLS, ie proper sports cars of which really the SLS is the only car in the line up that can really say that.
