So in the honest opinion of all, which is the best car to have out of all the years the Chimaera was produced?

Go!

The sweet spot was the 430 from 93/94. Very strong revvy motor but with the slicker Rover gearbox. A healthy one will have around 250 bhp. If you're lucky enough to find a big valve version it will be as quick as any of the 500's. biggrin

hmmm, yes the 4.3 does look the special one to have, out of all the 4.0, which year is the better/most desired?

IIRC 98/99 is the year to be slightly wary of as that's when they bought all the kit off the retiring powdercoating company and brought it in house.... and took 2 years to get it right..

TBH though by now I suspect a number of those years of car would have had outrigger work done anyway, or to have been so well cared for they are no worse than any other..

Silver painted chassis are considered less prone to rot.

there's a gold 500 here on the classifieds, (gold being a perfect donor colour for a white wrap)... All the private adverts on here I presume are by known forum users, is this a good value beast and is it known by all?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/t...

So I am gathering a 96/97 with the later T5 gearbox is the go... If it has a black or dark grey interior I can wrap it in white and be very content....

you will get conflicting info on this site.

Te true answer is the latest, best condition car you can afford.

What is your budget?

400 will go well enough, but if you have owned some quick cars you will yearn for a 450 or 500.

Having owned a 450 and a 500, I would not settle for less than a facelift 500 (97 on).

As has been mentioned, chassis condition is important, as are the other weak points like the alarm etc.

At the end of the day it is all personal preference and budget. My personal opinion is 10k is the min for a decent well looked after chim that wont need a pile spending on...

Drive one first, making plans to buy one and wrap it is very admirable, but you might find, as a porkah fan, that it's a mite too manly for you wink

This 500 has just had it's price reduced too! A very tidy example - look at the interior condition!

Lovely car, but not a real fan of the headlight conversion, to me it looks a little Asian than British now... It looks as though the gold one has been sold, pity, love the black interior... And for me the interior must be black... and what about the 4.5?

Also, was PAS an ordered extra or was this added to all Chimaera's from a certain date? My theory being, if the PAS is not on the car it's one less potential problem and far less chance the wife will want to drive it.

I know what you mean about PAS but IMO it will make the car more difficult to sell on in the future as most buyers want the power assistance...

we owned one with pas and one without.

i much prefer the drive without but agree it's a bit of a workout parking etc. that said my wife didnt mind.

i agree it is one less thing to go wrong. we lost one buyer who wanted pas. slippery bought it so you can ask him if he plans to add it, or likes the fact it stops his wife wanting to drive it!

I'm just outside of London, (Dorking).

You're welcome to try my very quick 4.6 with PS.

It will be for sale very soon as I have two.

98- PAS was standard, although knowing TVR that may well mean "standard, assuming we have a PAS rack in stock" and customers could specify quite a bit about the build so there are likely to be some non-PAS 98- cars out there.

PAS isn't that troublesome, no more on the Chim than any other car and rebuild kits/companies are readily available.

PAS is a personal choice thing, I like it on mine and still feel the feedback is excellent

Hi Phazed,
kind offer, and funny enough, I have a rare weekend off this weekend. Would love to go to a TVR meet if there is one on this weekend...

Is there some photo's of your car on here somewhere? Not too sure I need an even faster TVR, but you never know. If I was to wrap a car in white, then the only prerequisite is a black leather interior...

I guess as every one says, it's all about the particular car. Ideally a 97' 4.3 no PAS is the most appealing at this point. Engine size can be waived for the right car though.....

Loads of piccies on my profile biggrin.

I am around all weekend even if you want a try.

Believe me, you want power steering. Having had both, anyone who says otherwise either hasn't got it, hasn't tried it, is jealous, has their head in the sand or ..............
