Help: Why this exhaust on Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe?
Discussion
Hey PistonHeads!
I filmed this really rare Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe at the AVD Oldtimer Gran Prix, really great sounding machine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSCl7JaDyVM
But it has a strange exhaust, it is not the stock one. My first idea was that it a replica, but who would let a replica run at a race where only pre 1964 cars are allowed?
Also I found pictures of the same car on other events ( historic Spa: http://8w.forix.com/spa11/tn-spasixhours11-fvdv-42... where it has the original exhaust.
A few days ago a member of another forum told me that the car was probably to loud for the Nürburgring's noise (even though it was very loud, the earth quaked in a radius of about 5 meters) regualtions or for the driver, he said that the stock exhaust would be so loud that it is to loud for many drivers.
Can anyone tell my why it has this strange exhaust?

its will be for noise regulations
it may be that even if it wasn't required on that particular day, it was going somewhere else that needed it and you would assume that the engine had been dyno tuned with it, it was too much hassle to take it all of and revert back to the 'proper' one.
I doubt on a car like this the 'missing' horse power between the period pipes, and the 'noise cheater' is even noticed!

You really couldn't say that it was down on horse power, it dominated the race. But to put a car that drove in le mans against fast E-Types and 250 GTB SWB's is a bit unfair I guess it may be that even if it wasn't required on that particular day, it was going somewhere else that needed it and you would assume that the engine had been dyno tuned with it, it was too much hassle to take it all of and revert back to the 'proper' one.

that was the my point, the tiny loss of horse power by having a large restrictive silencer isn't really noticed on something like this as it has so much power to start with!
