I have a fairly new Boardman bike with Avid disc brakes. After a ride yesterday I had picked up a squeak from the rear disc, I've never had discs on a bike before so had a look but couldn't see anything obvious. I saw this on Halfords site ::clicky:: would this stop the squeak or is there anything else I should do?

Depends depends depends.

What brakes are they? bb5s? elixirs? failing that what bike is it?

Has anything changed to start it squeaking? ie might you have oiled it and got oil on the disc / pads?

Is the brake dragging at all? lift the rear wheel and turn the pedals to see that it spins freely

Ahh I did use a wee bit of tyre shine to bring them back to life after a chalky then dusty ride, maybe some of that got on the discs?? Would that make them squeak?

They will pick up squeaks from time to time, and there are a load of reasons why as long as they still work just ride it, it'll sort itself out.

If power has gone right down a clean might help, but it could be a number of things.

Hang on... did I read that right? You've sprayed your tyres with silicon?

Yeah, that stuff will get everywhere and yes it will balls up your brake pads, if you must use that sort of stuff spray it onto a cloth and rub it on.

Do not coat your tyres with tyres spray though, unless you want to reduce the grip to a level akin to riding on Teflon coated ice.

Sounds good to me, as long it's a normal occurrence. Not lost any power so I'll take your advice thanks.

I too have a rear disc which honks really loudly on occasion.

I cure it with two or three stops from a fair speed, without locking up, in succession.

It does come back.

No oil or sprays have been near it.

I think it was probably caused by my going down a long tarmac downhill on its second ride and me dragging the rear brake as I was terrified, it blued the rotor, but has worn the blueing off now.
