apprentiships ?
Discussion
My 19 yo daughter is applying for apprentiships at the moment and after looking on line and speaking to her i'm flabbergasted at what they class as an apprentiship nowadays. With all due respect for people in these jobs, are Receptionists and admin jobs proper vocations.
Also i'm hearing that youngsters are being used as cheap labour for a year in return for a nice govt grant, with no job or real prospects at the end of it all.
I would appreciate any advice as i want what is best for her and she is desperate to just get some experience so she can move onto something better.
She has good O level grades, average a level grades, she's confident and has a good work ethic.
What annoys me, is she currently works for wilkinsons in nottm on 6.50 an hour and the jobs she's applying for are half that money. Which would be fine if she was getting a proper profession at the end of it all.

I can only speak as some one who runs an apprenticeship scheme within my business.
Legally I could pay £2.65/hr, I don't I pay more as that wage is pathetic. I will also increase wages every 3 months if they are progressing.
Also provided the apprentice works hard and fits in and proves they are capable of doing the job then there is a job at the end.
I get £2500 grant per apprentice.
No way does this cover costs for loss of production, training, f
k ups etc but it helps.
The down side is it seems like a lot of kids don't want to work...... I shortlisted 10 candidates for the last position, 7 never turned up for the interview, the other 3 were not great but offered one the position, he never turned up.... called him and he said "he wasn't really bothered about getting a job at the moment"
Having said all that the current apprentice is great and will be an asset to the company in the future.

I speak as an marine engineering apprentice, perhaps what you'd call a "proper apprenticeship".
In all honesty, its s
t, i wouldn't put my worse enemy through it. Its not the being used as cheap labour a lot of the time. Its not the money, i'm on damn good money actually, more than my mum who works in mental health. Its not that theres a lack of prospects at the end, or progression up the ladder in years to come.
Its the people who set up, run and manage it. They don't have a clue about what it is you need to mould an apprentice into, they have no idea what its like for the apprentices out in the workplace, what they're expected to know, what they're expected to do.
And the paperwork, ohhh the paperwork. I know people who have written an entire NVQ without doing any of the work theyr'e saying they have. Because nobody seems to know whats going on anywhere. Perhaps its just where i work, perhaps its the size of the business i work for which means these kind of things can get looked over so easily, or perhaps its just that people just don't care about the education of people in apprenticeships anymore, because its defiantly the vibe i'm getting from people in other places too.
