Credit Scores and Debts
Discussion
Can't find a money section so if this is on the wrong forum page I'm sorry.
I'm 29 and 100% debt free, don't owe anyone anything... the only debt directly involving me is my sister who owes me £90 but that's it.
Never had a loan, Never had a credit card , Never had an over draft, No student/college loan, No mortgage, no unpaid bills, nadda, zip, zilch, diddly squat.
Always paid by cash or debit card in full... If I didn't have the money, I didn't buy it end of.
I want to rent a house/flat... I can pay the deposits and start up costs in full from savings
BUT The letting agent wants my credit rating...
As far as I and he can tell, never having had credit I don't actually have a credit score
How the f
k do I get a credit rating without getting a credit card? or am I doomed to getting a card knowing full well I will lose fight against temptation, use it and get into debt?

Get a card, use it, pay it off, repeat for a year or two.
Self employed with (currently) wildly fluctuating income... I don't think I could 100% guarantee I'd be able to pay it off on time every time, then the interest adds up...SebastienClement said:
Have you ever had a phone contract?
Little things like that help.
Nope Vodafone pay as you go...Little things like that help.

You will have a score, albeit a low one (probably).
I'd suggest you start by using noddle.co.uk to get an indication of what your score and profile look like. (It's not as comprehensive as experian or equifax but is guaranteed to be free to use).

It won't add up to much if you just put a couple of tanks of petrol a month on it, stuff that you would normally buy with your debit card. It does need a certain amount of discipline but you sound like you are pretty well equipped with that anyway. SmuttyYoda said:

I had a "Credit check" done on me before by a letting agency. Prior to having the check done I was concerned about having a poor credit history. HOWEVER, after asking them for more detail, they explained that the credit check was simply to verify I was who I said I was. They didn't care about my "credit history" so long as I was who I said I was and I could give them deposit.
That's interesting
This agency has already seen some of my bank statements (including ones from previous address), driving license, birth certificate and reference letters from my parents previous and current land lords (I want to move out from my parents home) in what I assumed was an attempt to prove I am who I say I am... then they did an on-line credit check and claimed they could find no credit history for me
I don't think I'll go for a flat/house let through that agency again... something seems a bit off

Why not save up, and offer to pay six months rent up front?
That's what one of my lads did.
No risk at all for the landlord, then when he got to know my son,...then reverted to one month in advance.
But, you should also get a credit card, and buy food/petrol with it and pay it off in full each month.
This will quickly help your credit rating.

I did (well 4 months + the deposit) the land lord told me to go through the agency as he's 'not an accountant' and the agency ran the credit check, couldn't find a history for me and said 'No'
.I think the land lord in this case is as new to this renting/letting malarkey as I am.
