If experience of creaks has taught me anything it's almost never the BB despite is sounding like it is!

Oddly when I had the similar sounding noise I found it to be the stem / headset.

Bikes make funny noise and they never seem to be from where you think !!!

I had a loud creek which I thought was the bottom bracket. Only happened when I was out of the saddle. Turned out to be the front wheel quick release wasn't tight enough. Gave the QR a spray and tightened it up and it's all quite again now.

Had a creak recently that was there for over a 1000 miles of dry riding. Rode in very heavy rain a couple of weeks back and the creak completely disappeared. 2 weeks later and it's started to come back again.

How weird is that?!

Funny you should post this. Mine has been creaking and yesterday I decided to strip it down completely to the frame and give everything a clean, lube and tighten.

I discovered that of the three bolts holding the dropout below one was a bit loose, one was ready to drop out and the other was missing, presumably somewhere in Berkshire.


If anyone finds it I'd appreciate it if they could send it on. The replacement 10mm bolts have cost £10 for a pair!

Last annoying creak I had turned out to be the pedals. Only found out after I had the shop replace the bb under warranty. Interestingly the same set of pedals didn't creak when fitted to another bike.

I had a creak I think I've sorted AT LAST.

Replaced

The seatpost binder: nope.
The rear skewer (which was bent): nope
Half rebuilt the rear hub and bought new bearings and specialist tools (but didn't fit them in the end): nope
Stripped and cleaned the headset - BINGO (I think)!!

Fixed my creak tonight, was the BB as expected, old one came out along with half a cup of water... Oops!

On the plus side a new Tiagra BB was less than a tenner from Bike Tart, and the Hollowtech's really are easy to swap.

Mine was doing this,but got really bad during the hot spell in July. Turned out it was the saddle rails in the plastic saddle base, put some light oil down them and its stopped. Discovered this after doing the BB, pedals, seatpost, headset and stem, found by moving my butt from the front to rear of the saddle the creaking changed so either the saddle was the culprit or I'd got a creaking butt.

I had exactly this last night, up out of the saddle climbing and creaking away like a good un, I thought BB, mechanic mate just it'll be the front QR, stopped at the top, tightend it up and all gone.

Not warranty IMO: nothing was "wrong" as such beyond something being loose and/or a bit dry. Basic maintenance. And you asked them to do it, therefore...expect to pay. A bit st maybe, but there you go...

Sounds like you need a better LBS, I doubt even Sigma would have charged for that if you bought it from them.

They've stepped it up recently, and for things i've bought recently they have been among the cheapest anywhere, and of course the service is usually good too. I would imagine the prices at your small LBS are far worse as they make more margin...

Totally agree with your first statement. My LBS still looks at my bike for free with well over a year of ownership passing...
