Saw Steve on Friday night in Leeds - what a great show he put on, absolutely top drawer, Whispering a Prayer was worth the ticket price alone.
one minor gripe is that the people of leeds didn;t turn out in many numbers to see it, i was ashamed in fact. if there were 300 there we were doing well.
he deserved better and didn't get it.
top top performance and Dave Weiner is some guitarist too. fab stuff. poorly attended.

I think I've seen Steve two or three times live now. Once on G3 and twice live solo, I think? Anyway, he always puts on an awesome show, and Whispering a Prayer is amazing live. Dave always had a solo spot when I saw them live, though in truth I think Tony MacAlpine was the one to watch, he was fearsome. The band was better then too, I've never really rated Bynoe on the bass. When they had Billy Sheehan on bass, they were a real supergroup! I saw Steve live with his Sheehan, Weiner, Macalpine lineup. Tbh I thought the ticket price was worth it just to see Macalpine alone. I preferred Virgil Donati on the drums, but I only ever saw him with Jeremy Colson, wh has always been impressive, if lacking the crisp technical edge of Donati, at least making up for it with heart and power.
As ever, Steve has always been incredible live, though I was less enamoured with his experimental period towards the end of the 00s where he had that questionable violin player on his live band, and I know he has a dancing harpist these days. I suppose that comes with the territory of being less interested in being seen as a guitarist and wanting to be seen as a composer instead. What I liked about the live shows I saw was that it was just about a bunch of top drawer musicians doing unbelievable things with their instruments and playing amazing songs, there was less frippery, less ziz zaz and flim flam and more incendiary fretwork.
Every time I saw him, and also fellow legendary guitarist Satch's shows, Newcastle city hall was pretty much packed out. Wikipedia says that is a 2135 seat venue, and there was not many empty seats that I could see on any occasion. A shame that Leeds didn't give a good turnout!

it was honestly top notch and he was very humble and thankful in the face of a sparse, if enthusiastic audience.
sometimes the guitar was a tad low in the mix, the 7 string bass drowned out a bit of the melody at times, but I can also put that down to the acoustics of a half empty room.
dave did two solos - his acoustic solo was amazing and they even dragged a roadie in to play backing chords on a couple of tracks!
another highlight was that he dragged two guys up out of the audience to "write" a song on the hoof and one of the guys' faces was like a a proper OMG I can't beleive I'm on stage with Steve Vai and he let them sit on stage for the rest of the gig afterwards - nice touch.
all in all a very professional performance.
