i enjoy a good long detailing session on my car as much as the next PHer (snowfoam, 2 bucket wash, polish when required, and a damn good wax) but, having tried it, claying just seems like a stretch of arm-ache and tedium too far. Or am I doing it wrong?

Yeah I think so although I'm no expert !! I've clayed mine a couple of times using Meguirs kits. Spray the quick detailer on to lube and just gently rub. You don't have to apply much pressure because the bar just slides over the lube.

Made a massive difference first time I did it.

Just to add Ive now stopped using Polish I just use a good quality wax.

Does your paint not feel way smoother and could you not see the spots of dirt on the clay as you worked? If so your paint must have been perfect to start with, this is unlikely though.

Claying is a great way to make the paint clean and give it a smooth finish... before you clay, try getting a decent fall out remover like IronX (be warned, it stinks), then clay... makes it a little easier.

This, IronX and a tar remover if you have tar spots, then clay.

If you are adding a layer of protection (wax/sealant) you will only need to clay once a year. I find it is worth it for the difference it makes.

Waxtec fallout V2 does as good job (if not a smidge better) than iron-x and doesn't hum nearly as much as the "cherry scent"...
bit cheaper too if i recall.

Claying is good, however you just seem to notice every tiny blemish. I clay my car twice a month probably, which might be excessive (I dont know) It does get all the tiny bits of grime and tar off of the paint work

Twice a month? Yikes. Twice a year would be fine!

I recently tried claying and it was great. Its just very expensive stuff.

Yesterday I used some of my son's plasticene and some washing up liquid as a lubricant — worked great,

Another way of saving money is by scrapping the ironx - I used a very strong magnet wrapped in a cloth. Seemed to get some bits off too. Once done a quick spray of the simoniz dashboard shine onto the paint and it looked really deep and glossy too smile

yes - this does rather conform to some of my suspicions about its value/effort ratio

Yeah this is spot on, claying only really needs to be done more often if you don't use a good APC before snowfoaming.

As to whether to use polish or wax, polish is designed to make your paint look good by removing the swirls and fine scratches, RDS is different and needs a bodyshop to soort, wax is designed to protect the finish you have achieved.

If you think its excessive, try claying it then washing it again afterwards wink

Generally i do mine twice yearly, early in march as thats when show season starts then i'll do it again in september.

Twice a month tbh is a bit too much, if you've got a decent wax on it it should be able to defend very well for a good 6 months or so
