Noise reduction challenge

Afternoon all,

I would be interested to know what I can do to reduce noise is shots such as the one below. Would anyone like to have a play with it and then tell me what they did?


Engines are noisy things par Chris Walker, on ipernity

It's shot at 6,400 ISO on a Canon 7D. I can stick the original RAW file into Dropbox if that would allow for better results.

What's your conversion software of choice? Have you tried whatever NR that has?

There's a quick tutorial on using photoshop's noise reduction filter here:

Or a number of dedicated noise reduction tools, Neat Image, Noise Ninja, etc. or even just the noise reduction settings in LR.



Personally, unless it's a crazy amount noise (or chromatic noise) then in-general I've stopped worrying about it Only if I noticed it a screen-res or when printed would I set about trying to fix it.

Convert it to B&W. Noise that ruins a colour picture instantly and automatically adds masses of "art".

This is science fact.

More seriously, I find that noisy pictures can be made acceptable by simply using Lightroom's tools to kill off the colour noise, whilst leaving the luminance noise alone.

I'm using Elements 11. It didn't really seem to make much difference when I tried the noise filter.

Wind the colour noise reduction all the way up. This will not remove luminance noise, but it's colour noise that looks awful.

I have to say I've been very impressed by the noise reduction in LR, very simple to use and gives great results. I'm sure there are better options for the pro's but for me it's as good as I could expect from affordable software!

Here's my attempt. Noise reduction in Camera Raw, white balance adjusted, then pushed it through DFine 2. Not suitable for 100% croppage, but certainly very passable for web use.

capture one Pro has a pretty awesome new noise reduction, I would try that if you have it.

Done some noise reduction with same method as above with similar results. Just joined flickr but cant seem to post the image. Any pointers would be appreciated.
