Tapping Noise When Braking

Hi all. This is my First Post on PH. I'm a member of the 911 UK forum which I've used for months and it is really good. I thought I'd try Piston Heads as I've heard good things from friends who use it regularly.


I have a question that I'm hoping someone on here may have an answer / suggestion for.
This morning I heard a tapping sound from rear of my car, but only each time I applied the foot brake. It was a fast "clicking" noise which seemed to slow down as the car slowed down. Any ideas what this may be? I've not heard it before.

Have you checked if there is a stone in the pad or one of the cooling holes on the disc?

Negative, I haven't. This morning I had to catch my train, hence other than a quick glance, I didn't check anything thoroughly. I'll have a closer look this evening. Thank you for the suggestion.

I would jack it up and turn each wheel by hand to see if you can replicate.

It does sound like something trapped in the brake or wheel area.

If you were not going too fast, I've had a nail in the tyre before which made itself known by a regular metallic tapping sound as the wheel went round...

Edit: oh, but you say when braking...ok might be something else then

Is your car on floating discs (Alcons, PFs or PCCB)?

Not sure re: Floating Discs. What are they? It just has the standard brakes, not the uprated PCCB ones.
