flat battery -- key stuck in ignition

my 7.2 GT3 recently refused to start.
battery (10 months old, fitted when I bought the car) was completely dead. I also use the car usually at least once a week for at least 30 miles.
after the RAC man managed to open the bonnet (took about 30 minutes -- is this supposed to take so long, or was the RAC man clueless [he claimed he had done this many times before]?), we managed to start start the car using the RAC jump start battery (he needed 2!) -- very bizarre.
however, when switching off, the key would not release.
Porsche Assist says this is quite common and a 'security feature', and proceeded to give instructions to RAC man to remove key. RAC man clearly has no idea what he's doing, so I stopped him and sent the car to OPC.
OPC tests revealed that a cell was knackered.
OPC says the ignition barrel needs replacing, and that it may/could have cause the battery to drain (and die). Battery just suddenly stopped working .. in the middle of a track day at Goodwood.
Am also getting new battery. All covered by warranty.
Any one experienced or heard of the "key stuck/flat battery/security feature"?
Any similar experience of RAC man abilities?

OPC are wrong saying the key barrel needs replacing . You say the battery is completely shot after 10 months - then the battery is the fault , particualry of you say one cell is shot - its kanckered then .The battery will not hold charge if you've jumped the car with a shot cell.
key barrel requires good current to release the key & with a jump pack on it - this wont suffice .
I had this issue with my 997.2 RS . Dead battery , car had been sitting , alarmed for over 2 months . Tried jumping the car with the normal technique , jump pack on sill door catch & fuse box , no go . Had to get in behind the fuse box & trip the relay to get bonnet open . This took me less than 5 minutes . Jumped the car , all fine . The battery is only 6 months old with no faults . I think you find you wont have the key release issue again if you get a new battery . Hang on OPC will replace it with one of their rubbish 'Porsche approved' items under warrantee. Maybe you will have the same issue after another 10 months !

yes I take your point, I always ensure that the conditioner is out of the car and connected to a supply with earth leakage trip in case of any electrical problems, in normal use they create no heat. I don't like disconnecting the battery for any length of time, lead acid batteries do not like standing especially in the cold. I leave the car in a locked garage, the car unlocked with no alarm set with the charger, a C Tech, connected and return, even after a couple of months, to find everything spot on.

I use my car about once a week, except when I am on holiday abroad.key barrel requires good current to release the key & with a jump pack on it - this wont suffice .

Can't put on charger as there's no power socket near my parking space.
OPC fitting a new Porsche batery of course.
The key issue is happening WITH new, fully charged battery fitted.

The key issue is happening WITH new, full charged battery fitted.
My car, albeit a totally different beast, is left on a trickle charger on a regular basis since I bought it 18 months ago, had no issues to date at all. Luckily there's 15 months warranty left on it (don't ask!)
Seems like you've been ok up until now without one, but my car is left for 2 weeks at a time without use as you know.
Lets hope the OPC sort it for you.

OPC seems to know what they are talking about, but car has been in for too long while they dealt with the 1 Sept rush, and parts going missing ..
I just want the car back so I can enjoy it in this weather!
