Evening all, hopefully someone can give me a little advice.
I recently bought a 2004 996 4s with 36K on the clock.
Car is in good shape and has all the stamps in the book.
Last week I got a low coolant level warning so topped up straight away and thought nothing of it.
I have since checked for water in the oil and any apparent leaks, all seems to be ok.
When I was reversing the car up the drive this afternoon I noticed a few drops of water on the floor as I was reversing. After a look under the car the pipework on the drivers side leading to the radiator appeared wet at the rear of the car and water was tracking down the pipe. A small amount of water is evident.
Anyone got any idea's what this could be or how to resolve??

Any assistance would be gladly appreciated.

Check the cap ideally have an 03 cap.

The tanks can have leaks.

Also check rads and all pipes.

Could well be a tiny leak in the expansion tank. The plastic can get brittle over the years. Happened to mine
last year, and woould only leak when the car was warm.

could also be the water pump - water can start high up and follow many routes

To be blunt, how to resolve boils down to one of two options: You 1) either determine where the leak is coming from and fix it yourself, or 2) you take the car to someone to do that for you.

Since option 1) seems to be a problem for you, you must go for option 2).

There is no magic mantra that will help, unfortunately, and allowing the engine to overheat is a huuuuuge no-no which could for all practical purposes destroy it.

Be aware that a leak, even if from the upper parts which means that you could potentially keep the reservoir topped up continually, means that there is no pressure in the system, which means that if the water temperature could exceed 100C in places were the system pressurised as it should be, just won't, it will simply boil off creating pockets of steam in the engine rather than coolant.

I would drive the car like a granny to the nearest garage, assuming the leak is not that bad that I needed to top up on the way there (topping up a hot engine with cold water is another terrible thing to do)

Just to keep you all updated found some pin holes in the aluminium pipe running from the top of the engine (drivers side) down to the pipe that runs under the centre of the car. Pipe has failed directly under the pipe clip. Has anyone any experience of replacing this pipe. Part n. Is 99610661074.

Must be a reason for the failure, was it induced by wear caused by vibration perhaps?

Had a close shave with a similar pipe that runs under the car, it came off it's retaining clip and was resting on the pointy end of one of the many self tappers, IIRC one that retains the underbody cover - fair bit of wear there but looks OK, would not have lasted very long if undetected.

It just looks like regular corrosion. Not impressed but could be worse. Looks like engine out then
