Erm, aren't both pics showing the thing assembled the same way? Correct way is for the narrow lands on the inner to point at the wider lands on the outer (which both pics seem to show?) Easy test is, if it is right it will have lots of plunge and articulation; if wrong, it will lock up with little movement.
I'd use inner circlips but I've seen them without (one on my car originally) - some shafts will not allow the joint to go beyond the splines anyway due to the profile and machining

I remember having struggled quite a bit when doing mine. I went on the internet to find picures of a dismantled/assembled joint. Once to understand how it is done, it is a piece of cake to reassemble.
