tansaxle fitting question/problem

Any one run into this?
I am fitting the transaxle today, and everything looks good. Using a clutch alignment tool, and that slides all the way in and everything is centered. The transaxle slides all the way in, with no problem, ultil the last 1/4 inch. I can not see anything that would prevent it from seatng all the way. The guide tube is passing thru the pilot bearing and the spline is passing thru the clutch plate. The alignment tool and the spline are exactly the same size, so there shouldnt be a bearing issue at the crank. No amount of wiggling or cussing is helping. Anyone had this? Anyone able to offer a solution?

I fitt the clutch pressure plate loose enough to move the friction plate then slide the box over get the box less then 4mm away from the engine then slowly tighten the clutch plate though the starter hole by turning the engine over to get at all the bolts. Then once there nipped up enough so the friction plate won't move I take the box off and tighten then up with the torque wrench. The plate should be in perfect alignment then.
PS I do hope your fitted the release fork to the bearing with string and are not making the rooky mistake of fitting the release fork to the box before sliding it onto the engine ?

You might want to use an elastic band rather than string?

Also you will need the dexterity of a very small child with small fingers to match.

Thanks for the tips. I am using a rubber band to hold the release fork. That aligns every time. The flywheel or starter ring does not appear to be interfering either. I will give Clive's trick a try. Maybe my alignment is off a bit. I am using the alignment tool and that is engaging fully, but I am out of ideas.

To be honest I ran out of elastic bands once, and found that thin string did just as good, still gets destroyed as easily. So have done it that way more than once now, even on a Porsche 911....
Well, I found the problem...
When my engine builder pressed in the pilot bearing, it folded over the back lip of the bearing race slightly. Enough to prevent the shaft from fully seating. The front of the bearing looks perfect, and I can understand how the builder missed it. I have looked at it carefully twice and didn't see it. Anyway, I guess its better to find it this way than to have it go bad after it was all together.
Anyone have a part number/manufacturer for that bearing? I could get it from the factory, but would be much quicker if I could find it locally.

Update -
Got the new bearing installed, and she slid home perfectly...
Added the gear oil and no leaks or other drama. Should have it fired up and running by the weekend now!
One question however.. When I installed the clutch release lever rod, it went in just right. When I tapped in the outside needle bearing, it seemed to go in a little further than I would have expected. I would have expected it to stop flush with the housing but it went past flush by about 1/8 inch (or about 3mm). I would have thought the release rod would have prevented it from going too far... So, is this normal, or do I need to pull it out and investigate further?

If you have the later type you have a small strip of metal (kinked) that takes a plastic spacer one end and an M6 bolt the other end to hold the shaft in place.
I would have though it is OK so long as the plastic bush butts up to the end of the shaft and bearing.
