simple question ,why is the e61 fitted with 275/35/19 on the rear and the e60 has 285/35/19

has anyone fitted 285/35/19 on the e61 . the only reason i'm asking is with 285 there's more choice

It'll fit, and be within the tolerance. I wonder if there's clearance issues, I'd be surprised if there was from such a tiny move though.

Insurance might have an issue if you choose to tell them. I'm sure many don't, though I'd air on the side of caution.

Bear in mind the rear suspension is different what with the air springs. And the wheels are subtly different too - E61 M5 - 9 x 19 ET:17 and E60 M5 - 9.5 x 19 ET:28. On that basis I would stick with the factory size if the only reason for switching is ease of tyre purchase...

I fitted M6 wheels to mine as they are the same width as the saloon but have the same offset as the touring. They fit perfectly and fill the arches nicely without any clearance issues.

As far as I know there are 2 types of M6 Alloys (there may even be 3). You can get M6 style alloys that are specifically made for the M5 E61. Are these what you have, or did you buy a set of E60 167 Alloys?

Thanks

Minute difference, perhaps, but still interesting that the gearing on the E61 is 1 % lower with that tyre difference.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/km Difference
285/35-19 100mm 341mm 682mm 2143mm 467 0.0%
275/35-19 96mm 338mm 675mm 2121mm 472 -1.0%

When I got it, it was fitted with the M6 style wheels for the E61 with 275 tyres, then I bought the wheels pictured from a written off M6 which are slightly wider with the same offset as the E61 wheels.

Have you still got the other wheels? Do you want to sell them?

£1,000 and my E61 M5 standard wheels. I will collect them from you, sort out the tyre swap - almost zero hassle for you.

The E61 is designed to carry more weight on the rear axle (being an estate) so I reckon the reason they fitted 275 tyres on it is to allow the tyres to clear the arches more easily when the rear axle is fully laden.

Thats just my guess. It might not be the actual explanation. I like it though.

Umm, sorry to rain on your parade but... the peak load figures of the saloon and the estate are much the same (the estate is rated at 10kg less). And the E61 has self levelling rear suspension via air springs.
