2.5l Vs 3l intake and wastegate Q's.
Discussion
I’ve been researching the m12 for some time, along with some other options. I’ve been to a few shows but never had a ride along in a Noble. From the various Youtube videos I have watched, there seems to be some vast differences in noise inside the cabin from noble to noble specifically relating to the turbos.
I’m trying to get to the bottom of this as pantomime is an important part of the driving experience for me and will ultimately help me decide which Noble to go for. I’m trying to find out if it's just the difference between cameras/mics, BOV or the differences between the 2.5l and 3l engines (maybe all three), although if anyone can clarify this for me I would be very grateful.
Older 2.5l engines look to have the air intakes nestled just behind the cabin, whereas the 3l engines have them towards the rear by the intercooler. I’m assuming this is better for induction but would having the intakes up by the cabin make a big difference to the noise? If so did, the 2.5l engine suffer because of this, I’m assuming they didn’t change it for fun?
Am I right in thinking that the 2.5l engines also had the wastegate up by the cabin too, was this moved to a different location on the 3l engines?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

If your on about the Darth Vader noises then yes its do do with the location of the air filters.
The 2.5 has them by the cabin like you said but many 3l cars have had them moved there for the extra noise.
Performance wise there isn't a differene, it's just for Darth Vader noise reasons, that become adictive

There is a Topic on moving the filters further down the page

just recently moved the filters for exactly this reason- to hear a few more comedy noises.
With the filters in the intercooler box you just don't hear the induction. This meant it was to civilised for me (there's speculation that the filters were moved there just to reduce the noise).
Simple mod and you'll find many threads- mine is most recent about this.
There are many reasons to go for a (stock) 3 over a 2.5, but it just depends on the car.
Wastegates are in the turbos (aren't they?) so they wouldn't move between 2.5 and 3.

+1 and I'm in Bognor
Thank you both. I'm actually based in West London (used to live in Ringwood) but would still love to take you up on your offer. I'm going to try and make it along to some meets and have a mosey around, If I can't I'll drop you both a PM in a few weeks. Very generous of you, pub lunches on me. D_G said:
My 3 has them by the cabin as standard BTW.
Mmmmm interesting, great tip I'll keep my eyes pealed. Thanks all.
For future searchers threads on moving the intakes on the m12 3.0 can be found here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... and http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
