6 Weeks ago I picked up my first car, I always said I was going to have a unique and big engined first car as I hated the usual boring corsa etc, so I picked up a pristine 1999 Saab 9-3 2.2 TID for £600.

Now of course I cannot stop thinking about my next car, I was thinking V8 (may settle for a loud V6!), cheap and had to have a real dirty noise to it, I always loved TVR's but had never really looked at a wedge, now that I have been looking at them the past couple of weeks, I have fallen in love with them..

I saw they range from £2500 - £7000 as I may be starting work full time soon saving up the cash over a year will not be a problem, but of course the main issue will be insurance (DUHHH). I have done the usual quotes on MoneySupermarket Etc, and the cheapest was about £5000.... Then I thought my insurance on the saab was 65% cheaper then it should have been due to the addition of a smart box, which only monitors speed, smoothness and time of use and does not come with any time curfews. Would it be worth a try to have a box on a TVR? Or would one press of the pedal send alarm bells off back at my insurers?!

I have not had a single problem with the box on my saab, it has quite a bit more power than most first cars... Each of my journeys are rated on a website, 0-10 being fine Zero to -10 being a warning, 3 warnings and your policy is cancelled. My average score is 7 overall so all is well.

I would probably use it as a daily driver, only doing about 3000 - 4000 miles a year, running costs at the moment will not bother me as all I spend my money on is my car!

Opinions?

As soon as that noise assaults your eardrums. all thoughts of "smooth" will disappear.

But, I will only be 19 in a years time! If you don't mind me asking, how old were you at the time, and what was insurance like?

Oh did I mention my first car is the 400SX - must have slipped my mind!

Yes I see your problem when I started driving these things (ahem) a few years ago I was about 29? And the insurance wasn't _that_ cheap though it did come down with no claims over the years. Now after time we are in the 'classic car' category but you might be struggling at 19 to get a classic policy? On the other hand there was that chap who got a classic tractor, and he was only 17 or so, so it can be done.

I think you may well be buggered getting reasonable insurance at 19. I got mine at 22 and classic insurance was around £900 but the insurance company i used then have now lifted the minimum age to thirty or something stupid like that.

You could try admiral as they are usually cheap(er) for younger drivers but forget the black box, i couldn't think of a worse hell than having a wedge and not being able to drive it like you stole it!
I agree, even in my SAAB the box is always on my mind, cannot imagine the torture of having it in a wedge! I am prepared to pay up to 2-3k on insurance if that is what it will take, I would say I am pretty good at saving my money, not sure what condition wedge I could afford after that.. maybe a 3-4k I hope.

Hi Mate..Its nice that the next generation are looking at wedges..Unfortunately you get shafted due to your age...Personally i think its a load of bks really!..Mind you i was quoted 4K by one insurance company for a 350i and im in the later years of my life..(In the OG bracket)...I just laughed loudly down the phone at them and hung up..Just recently i was going to insure a Tuscan for a friend and i was quoted £500..wobble..A shyte load of shopping around is needed, Try classic insurance or ask someone who is double your age to insure it and put you down as a named driver..Dont give up on it..Good luck and hopefully we will be welcoming you to the madhouse...Cheers...Ziga

Think most classic car policies are for 25+ year olds. At 19 insurance is going to be difficult for any car let alone something as sporting as a wedge. All I can suggest is that you phone around all the usual insurance companies including the classic car ones ( flux, RH etc) and see what they can do for you. You may need to do this sitting down as I'm sure some of the replies may make you feel faint!!!!

Is you thick ? This is PH!!! the answer is always either

a) kick her back doors in
b) MX5
c) Have you tried asking over at Mum'sNet ?

Anyway at 19, the OP might find an MX5 more suited to his rwd journey.

You do realise this is the Wedge forum, don't you? Wedge or MX5? Well they've both got 4 wheels (although not always on the end of the axle in the case of a Wedge)

Bought my 400SE when I was 27. Insurance has always been around the £700 or less mark. Ive always run it on a classic policy or tried to limit the mileage.

13 years later, it is still my second ( and occasionally 3rd / 4th car)

I'vce never heard of a V8 MX5 with a 113dB exhaust, plus I saw one today driving past with the TOP UP so I'm with the OP (expensive though it may seem).

Indeed. I've always liked a wedge.

That maybe so but its still a liberty...I dont like people that stereotype, They are basically saying that every young driver drives like a twaat!, There are quite a few of the older generation that drive like twaats..Whether you are 19 or 90 a new driver is a new driver..have you tried getting a quote for a V6 wedge in comparrison?...You might hanker for a V8..(I still do)..But a V6 can be just as enjoyable, It was actually cheaper on the insurance for me to supercharge mine than insuring a V8..Now i have a V6 that will give a 350i a run for its money!..Mind you the money i have spent on it i could of bought 2 X 350i or 1 x 450SE or....weeping..I still love you Delilah..(YOU COW).biggrin

You should think about a v6 ...after a few years with tvr in you blood you can do the v8s and maybe your insurance will be cheaper?????as an owner of a v6 its still a great car to drive and with straight through pipes with magnaflows for tips...its loud and gets a lot of looks ....If that's what you're after! I am surrounded by v8s over here and have been told by many people that its a unique sound!

I would settle for a V6!, just got quoted £2500 by the same insurer, so not to bigger difference between them
