I have been investigating new carpet sets to get an idea on prices etc. Have spoken with D&C Trim who use Coverdale Carpets. Why is it that the Griffith replacement carpet sets are so much more expensive than others! have a look at the Coverdale site - http://www.carcarpets.co.uk/index.asp

If you use the 80:20 wool range for example, the Griff set is £114 more than a complets set for a Rolls Royce Shadow 2 (which includes the boot). Now that is taking the preverbial, as there is acres more carpet in a Rolls (especially when they supply the boot carpet also). D&C quote about £410 plus VAT (£492), which is £30 more than buying from coverdale direct. Every example of car I looked at was cheaper than the Griff, including Porsche, MG, Triumph, Jaguar etc. Does anyone know or can profer a guess why we appear to be ripped off?

Although the RR will use much more carpet I doubt whether there are so many different pieces all cut to a particular shape and edged appropriately. 27 I seem to recall

I recarpeted my 500 several years ago and bought the carpet on roll from Coverdale to cut and make my own and a local upholsterer bound the edges. Big mistake! It would have saved a great deal of hassle to buy the set ready cut and bound from Coverdale.

I actually found them a very decent company to deal with and their spray adhesive was good. Dont bother with their adhesive remover, a waste of time, white spirit was far more eficient and even worked on dry adhesive. It pongs a bit but that soon wears off.

Removing the Whale Tail, hood, steering wheel and dash made the job a great deal easier.

Although wool carpet is more luxurious in an open car it all to easily gets damp and smells rotten so I opted for synthetic and glad I did.

I know that the Griff is quite a complicated carpet arrangement, but surely it cannot be the most complicated on the planet, hence the galactic level pricing! I think there is a little bit of 'TVR Tax' going on here somewhere as said above.

I am in contact with a local trimmer today who I am hoping is going to do my interior trimm work, he has said that it will be a better fit for me to get him to cut and fit my carpet to suite. Shall get some costs and compare to buying a £400+++ carpet kit. Shall keep you posted.

dave the trimmer recarpeted mine,

gave him the keys he did the rest.

it was around 500 if i recall correct.

not worth turning a spanner to do it myself as the carpet set from elsewhere was £400

Hi Steve, I think you are going to be correct, would not be surprised if the local trimmer comes back with a similar price, especially as I want hime to do the seats and other bits. Not worth ruining a good set of carpets for the sake of £100 for a specialist to fit (or make up).

Would like to use dave the Trimmer but he is some 100 miles away. Anyway this local trimmer I am going to see today (3 miles from where I work and I have the Griff with me), he has done Tuscans and a Sagaris and of course many other classics. Means it's all done locally rather than trawling miles away. Shall keep you all posted.

Bloody bargain IMO I went for the DIY Coverdale option years ago not hard but you don't save money frown

Took the Griff over today to see the trimmer I found locally - http://www.sfcar-trim.co.uk/

Great fella, really quality work. Has previously done a Sagaris and Tuscans, knows about the aukward removal of dash etc. Spent a good hour with him discussing Griff and looking at leather colours, what a minefield, so many choices!!!! He said that it is best to make up the carpet to fit from the roll as you will get a much better fit for our cars as there were variations, also can choose the edging colour to suite other trim. So he is now doing a quote and breakdown. Great for me as only 3 miles from where I work and 20 miles from home (25 - 30 minute run). Using Dave the Trimmer or D&C would mean massive miles. Good sign is he is booked up till beginning of December, would fit in fine as would only get job done over winter.

Will keep you posted. Pete

Have had a quote over week end from the local trimmer detailed in message above, cracking price and an added bonus he is not VAT registered, so that's a massive saving before I start. So waiting for him to get me some carpet samples in so as I can decide on a carpet colour at same time as the leather work. Exciting stuff. Will keep you posted (though wil not be booked in until at least December).
