So, tuned into the F1 channel this evening only to find an on screen message advising me that I needed to upgrade my subscription.
Got straight onto sky and spent a frustrating half an hour being passed around various people who had no idea about anything whatsoever really. Eventually I was told that I now needed the full sky sports package to get the F1 channel. I may have sworn at the call centre guy at this stage, but given their service, this is probably written on their script as a natural British response.
Now, I think I remember reading that this is the case for new subscribers, but I'm an existing customer.
What I think may have happened is that the wife removed the movies package recently, which came into effect last night. I think sky may have used this as an opportunity to set up a new subscription package and thereby relieve me of my favourite channel. I don't know, perhaps I'm mistaken. Nevertheless, a complaint has been emailed to sky.
In the meantime, can anyone shed any light on this?

This is exactly what has happened. There were rumours last week that Sky were going to remove Sky Sports F1 from all subscribers that received it via the HD pack only. This was apparently going to happen on 1st September (there is a thread over on the Digital Spy forums about this).
There was a clarification issued by Sky that there were no plans to remove the F1 channel from HD pack subscribers so long as they didn't make any changes to their subscription.
Unfortunately for you, you have removed Movies, which (even though it is non-sports related) constitutes a change to your package. In order to receive the F1 channel now you will have to subscribe to the full Sky Sports pack, unless your complaint to Sky is successful. Good luck.

It's definitely not a blanket thing as I'm watching the 2010 Italian GP as I type this.
Did your wife cancel the HD pack too? Good luck with the complaint procedure, it's like banging your head against a brick wall.
And you don't have the sky sports package I take it? Did your wife cancel the HD pack too? Good luck with the complaint procedure, it's like banging your head against a brick wall.
OK, time to put THAT rumour to bed.
This was asked internally (I work for Sky) and we were told that are currently (caveat as I can't promise it won't ever happen!) NO plans to stop, remove, integrate or any other method of removing the 'Legacy' HD pack (That is the one that costs £10.25pm and has been active since HD started and gives access to the F1 channel) from any existing customer that has it and doesn't change their package.
For NEW customers, you need to have Sky Sports in order to watch the F1.
For the OP, I have rather bad news. AFAIK there is NO way to put your previous 'HD' sub back onto your account. It doesn't exist as an available option for any customer. What I suspect has happened is the call centre advisor has offered your wife 'Entertainment Extra Plus' which is the existing 'standard' channel package in HD but this has caused you to lose the F1 channel. At the very least Sky need to put you in a position where you can watch the F1 channel at no increase in cost. The Advisor that reduced the package with your wife should have said that she will lose the F1 channel. If they did and the wife agreed, who's fault is it? I'd love to be a fly on the wall during that conversation! The call will have been recorded so should be easy enough to listen back to by a team leader.

I recently signed up to HD (recent as in last month, waiting for installation) and added Entertainment Extra+. Should I assume I won't have the F1 channel when it is installed? This was asked internally (I work for Sky) and we were told that are currently (caveat as I can't promise it won't ever happen!) My girlfriend & I recently moved into a flat together, Sky installed, Entertainment Extra+ in HD but no Sky F1 sorry! The only thing you’ll be able to view through OnDemand is the F1 show & the F1 Midweek review. Should be able to download them the day after they air on the channel.

I would happily bet you £5 that the "'Legacy' HD pack" which allows some of us to watch Sky F1 in return for being a HD customer is dropped for the 2014 season. Would know of any plans to match Virgin's offer to give customers free access to BT Sport? I really don't want to miss Moto GP, but I'm at my tolerance level for paying for TV already.
I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Sky won't enter into any commercial agreement with BT for BT Sport. It makes sense for BT and Virgin as Virgin have their own network and its more difficult for BT to get those customers to switch. BT want you to call them for BT Sport so they can try and switch you to BT for their overpriced BB and Talk packages.
Question to MissChief.
I have the full sky package, and have for years. Therefore I guess I have 'HD legacy', whereby I dont need Sky Sports (at the moment) to have F1, though I obviously have sports.
If I cancel Sports, am I going to fall into the trap of having no F1, due to the change of my package?

As long as you keep the HD Pack then you will keep the F1 channel, in HD too.I have the full sky package, and have for years. Therefore I guess I have 'HD legacy', whereby I dont need Sky Sports (at the moment) to have F1, though I obviously have sports.

Of course guys, I'm at the bottom of the ladder. If there are any plans to change any subscriptions then we usually don't find out until a couple of months before at the very most. Such decisions are hugely commercially sensitive and as a customer facing employee they are very careful what we know is case we 'blab' before its announced by marketing. All I can say is we've been told there are no plans that I am personally aware of to change the HD legacy package to remove it or the F1 channel from it. And that was confirmed by upper management this week as well.
@SkyHelpTeam on Twitter also said it was going from September and a few customers have had calls/emails from Sky stating this was the case. There are several examples of users on their forum who have lost F1 after package changes, or in one case, a box upgrade.
If the account holder definitely wasn't advised that they would lose F1, or you're still on the old package plus HD option, then log it as a formal complaint with Sky.
I know of cases where users have been put back on other legacy contracts where it's been shown that they were given incorrect information by Sky customer services about package changes.

MissChief - we've just moved house and are about to do the "Sky move" thing. We don't want to change our subscription (which includes the Legacy HD pack) for fear of losing the F1.
If we do the "Sky move" any ideas if we will keep the F1 or not?
TIA
If you don't do the 'cancel at old address, sign up as new customer at new address' thing then your account will continue as it is now. I.e. you WON'T lose the F1 channel. If we do the "Sky move" any ideas if we will keep the F1 or not?
TIA

People losing the F1 channel due to package changes is usually changing the HD pack to 'entertainment extra plus' which, if you don't have sports or movies then could save you £5.25 a month but still gives you all the Hd channels that are part of your package. If anyone at Sky suggests this DO NOT accept it as you WILL lose the F1 channel and it can't be changed back as far as I am aware.
