Standard engine mounting points?
Discussion
Hi all, this is probably going to seem like a really dumb question but I can't find an answer after trawling the net so I'll give it a go here and face potential ridicule.
My question is....
When contemplating an engine swap, how does one know whether or not a particular engine will fit a particular car? Are the mounting point location on engines a standard thing or do they vary massively in location, size, number and design from engine to engine and car to car?
I suspect the answer is that there is no standard since I havn't found any evidence of one and the fact that the variation in physical dimensions and design of engines would make this a fairly difficult thing to achieve.
The reason that I ask is that in a few months I'm planning to buy my first project car and a potential engine swap is an idea swilling around in my head a little (no solid plans whatsoever yet).
I obviously know that engines vary dramatically in physical size and design so may not physcially fit inside the engine bay but, how does one go about working out whether the particular mounting points make a particular engine/car combination totally impractical without actually buying and trying?

Your best bet is to Google for engine changes to the car you select then follow what has been done before.
Without wishing to be rude I would surmise someone with the skills required to start from scratch and install a car/engine combo that has not been done before would not have needed to ask the original question.

Knew someone would say this, however, you are making the assumption that that someone would be doing this alone.
Besides, I'm planning on doing low cost mucking around, I don't care if what I do takes years and never gets finished, it's all about getting my hands dirty and having a hobby.
Additionally, everyone has to start somewhere when they start learning about these things. Like I said, just an idea I'm mulling over, probably won't even attempt it this time.
Anyhow, question answered, thanks very much.
