Get them galvanised and then painted. No more worries.

Go for it! Practice first. Get them galved before welding.

I'm only guessing but do you mean galvanised after welding?

No, purchase the outriggers off Ebay/ dealer. Get them galved. Weld them on and the paint the lot. Taylor TVR also offer this service, but kudos for trying yourself.

I share your pain. Put a new engine in mine, back on the road 20th April, a week later it failed the MOT on outriggers. The only TiTTs organiser in history not to do the run in his own car.

Whilst TVR ownership can be injurious to your wallet, certain info on here could be injurious to your health, DO NOT TRY TO WELD WITH GALV ON THE OUTRIGGERS, by all means do the repair yourself and if you want to go down the galv route, ok , but remove the area of Galv you want to weld and apply something like Galvfroid after welding

Rich

That's why I questioned it!
It will be a full body off chassis restore that's why I thought the galv would go on last, crossed wires!
I shall start yet another chassis referb thread in due course but in the mean time any suggestions on how I can improve things are welcome,

Hi find someone that is a very good welder and buy some cheap tube and plate, get him to teach you for a little while then practice practice, practice, including cutting it open to see how good your penetration is.
Its not hard to weld, but its a little harder to weld well and bloody hard to be perfect without a lot of practice. Avoid gasless and use a good auto mask, never try to weld galv unless you grind the coating off first, cos it hurts when it spits and unless you have an air fed welding mask or can hold your breath for extremely long periods of time, the fumes are very harmful if inhaled, so remove more than enough from the piece before hand.
Give it a go then if you do manage to do your own chassis, then you would have saved a fortune, learned how to weld and have the satisfaction of saying "I did that!".
Im sure there is a local P/Her that will guide you for a few beer tokens, that's why I like this forum so much, someone will always try to help, no matter how trivial or awkward the problem.
Good luck and I am sure a man of your calibre will find easier than st'in yourself and not half as messy.

I think the point of having the outriggers dipped/ galved first is that they are then plated inside and out, so would probably out live the car. A lot of mild steel tubing like this rots from the inside out. A few drill holes would undoubtedly be required, which could be resealed, re-galved and then painted over. As for the H&S, mask off the areas where you'll weld or as previously mentioned strip the galv off, that way you wont suffer from metal fume fever.

There's some useful info about welding galvanised steel here:
