Got a hankering for some co-op zombie/monster shooting. Played the heck out of Killing Floor and L4D, until some nice chap hacked my Steam account and got me perma-bamned. I've been out of the PC game for a few years and only recently got a decent-ish system so not sure what is around anymore.

Worth picking up L4D2? Never had a PC when that came out. Have been looking at the DayZ mod but I'm led to believe I'd need to purchase ArmA 2 + expansion?

Dayz is rather different from your typical zombie game but in my oppinion the best. You would need to own arma 2 and arma oa I think it is? Both decent games on their own too.

The only experience I have had with it is watching a relatively old game play video, but the zombies seemed really lethargic and didn't seem to pose a threat at all. People just seemed to run around them. Have they improved the AI?

Dayz can be brilliant. 90% of the time its hard work and isnt much fun if you play on your own. There is a Dayz thread on here somewhere

Been playing Dead Island Riptide with a friend recently and as a Co-op game it's really good! Not at all like CoD Zombies which is good in its own right. But on Dead Island you're limited with ammo and HAVE to work together.

We tried the Sniper Elite Nazi Zombie Army standalone but both found it had horrific framerate issues...

L4D2 is worth picking up (wait for a steam sale) and also the additional free chapters (you can play L4D1 but with zombies and weapons from L4D2) some of the mods are good as well (I hate Mountains for example). But as to anything else - I've yet to find anything close though. Have tried the until recently named WarZ (now called Infestation: survivor stories) and if humanity ends up like the a-holes playing that game I'd happily turn into a zombie to eat them.
The original dead island is ok as is dead rising 2 but found D.I 1's quirks frustrating (zombie grab distance seems random etc..)

On DayZ - there is a standalone version in development. I don't believe there is a release date at the moment though.

It's been ages since I played it but it's definitely something a bit different.

That WarZ looks terrible. From the looks of it the stand alone client for DayZ has been in development for quite some time now. L4D is about £22 on Steam at the moment, will probably pick that up for now.

Got to limit my game buying or I might get a telling off, what with Battlefield 4 & GTA being bought.. smile

DayZ is definitely good fun. There was a group of regulars on here for a while, mostly playing Arma 3 now.

I pretty much agree here.

L4D 2 is very good. WarZ (now called Infestation: survivor stories) is a horrendous game. I play online with Jinx and we each picked it up for a couple of quid in a sale but I still feel ripped off. Also the other aholes that play it ruin what little fun there may be.

Dead Island is good but not great though my view may be coloured by the fact that the game play ended up nothing like the pre launch trailers and advertising had suggested.

The walking dead game is good but it's more an interactive comic than a shooter.

Another vote for L4D2, great game, and a great opening sequence. WarZ is ste, DayZ is good and ArmA 2 is pretty cheap

To be the voice of dissent:

If you're playing in a group of others of a similar mindset then I'd hazard that DayZ would be very good. I didn't have that option and as a solo player it's hard work - and more than a little soul destroying. With maps of where the goodies are it goes from painfully frustrating to merely exhausting, but having spent hours and hours sneaking around trying to get into a location with good gear only to get picked off by another player the second I've got a rifle and decent pack it got a bit much for me.

The game is brilliant - don't get me wrong. But the learning curve is very steep if playing on your own and there are a lot of players out there that will pick you off before you can even start to feel comfortable. And it's straight back to square one then.

ETA:
Just looked on the DayZ website, average lifespan is about an hour apparently. I'll easily spend that long getting a gun and some basic gear.
And despite that I'm re-downloading it to see if anything has changed.

I couldn't even get DayZ to run. No idea what the problem was but I'm addicted to iracing at the moment so can't really be bothered.

L4D is excellent for a pure shooter but I found it got tedious quite quickly which is odd as I could play the original for hours on end.

Some alternatives.
Amnesia:The dark descent is not really a shooter but has zombies/nasties and it quite scary (you spend a lot of time hiding in cupboards (it's better than it sounds).
Cry of Fear is a half-life2 mod. Bloody terrifying. More shooting than Amnesia but not a shooter per say.
The FEAR series is quite zombie heavy.
Plants vs Zombies (not a shooter but brilliant)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Ancient but Nazi zombies!

I bought a mid range PC about a month ago and bought Dayz.

You just need to buy the Arma 2 + expansion on steam. Its about £16 for them together.

There are many different Dayz mods you can download which are different. Ones with different weapons/vehicles and the zombies act a bit different in different mods.

Also there is a mod which has safe zones and vendors and currency.

The zombies on it are far from lethargic, but the only thing that is a pain is the glitch's/bugs. When they do start chasing you they bug around and also they can pass through walls/fences.

You get used to it though, it definitely claws you in, you end up sat there hours on end.
