The girlfriend and I are going to have a night out in York for my birthday at the end of the month, just after a decent hotel to fall into at the end of the night, ideally somewhere right in the centre to avoid a taxi there.

What's it like in York on days other than Friday/Saturday?

Would it be better to get a train there than far about with parking etc?

The town centre is busy pretty much every day, and most evenings, the busiest being Thursday to Sunday.

As for hotels, Cedar Court is the nicest, and where we put clients up if they want to stay in York. The Hilton is very central, right next to Cliffords Tower.

Cedar court has some of the worst service I've ever experienced for a purported 5 star place.

Food is average, but service is atrocious. Slow with not enough staff.

I'll not take clients back there.

I'd suggest Hotel du Vin if you're wanting top end in town or Middlethorpe Hall if you don't mind a taxi ride in.

It may be tricky finding one night accommodation close to the weekend.

I'm in Cedar Court now in a suite and so far so good!

I started my railway career in this building and I thought it would be nice to spend a few nights in York and especially in this hotel.

nowt wrong with the travelodge or premier inn - both central and virtually brand new. Probably full of drunks/stag do types though, but as you'll also be "merry" =- who cares?
