Chateau Musar

Has anyone else noticed the recent reappearance of Chateau Musar on the odd wine list?

I was lucky enough to do a tasting of all the 80s and 90s vintages a while back, and had understood they had changed their production methods that led to crap wine.

The 2003 is drinking well and the restaurant I'm in only wants 50 quid a bottle. A bargain for such an interesting wine.

I used to really like this, plus it's a great left-field choice to give to someone who appreciates good wine, when you can't quite stretch to a posh Bordeaux.

BUT... In recent years I've had so many duff bottles, that I no longer bother with it. I accept that the 'odd' bottle may suffer a cork taint since cork is a natural product, but 3/3? There's clearly something going on with production, which is a great shame. It used to be a fabulous wine.

Is this the Chateau Musar from Lebanon?

If so, fair enough it's a nice wine, but although I can't remember how much it cost, I used to be able to afford to drink it regularly in the Lark Lane wine bar in Liverpool as a student in the early Nineties. When on earth did it suddenly start commanding premium prices like £50 a bottle?

I first had Musar in a restaurant in the mid '90s. I don't remember the cost. Just how yummy it was. Been a fan ever since with the occasional bottle being enjoyed.
I've never had a duff one although I don't know what the most recent vintage was. I have a bottle or two in my racks still, maybe next w/e...

£50 in a restaurant? A bit steep but not outrageous for a £20 bottle,

Ahh, Musar... one wine I just don't get.

I've only tried a few bottles but each time found it rather lacking. Not sure if I've just been unlucky?

In early 90's was stocked by Waitrose - not expensive at all. Remember buying 6 bottles of 1983 which was fantastic. As some others have, I 've also given up with it in the last decade

Waitrose still stock it,2005 vintage currently, I beleive. I've tried it, but did not feel compelled to repeat the exercise, I've had far better wines for less
from the Wine society, of late.

It's certainly worth a try, but seems to be priced above its weight, to me, at any rate.

A few years back I picked up a couple of cases from Tescos 2003 vintage for £6 a bottle, really enjoyed them.
