Morning all. I'm currently looking at an Aston v8 vantage as a special prezzy for the wife. I've found a nice 20,000 low mileage example for the right money and really want to know what if any issues you guys have had with them. I've had a few quick cars in the past and some like my old Tuscan needed to be fettle s and looked after on a daily basis. What I now want is a car that she can drive almost daily that doesn't require a break down truck on standby. She's a fan of porsche 911s but really loves the Aston, and I have to admit on pure looks alone the Aston does it for me.
So can you tell me is the Aston a better choice over say a 996 turbo/997 carrera s4.

1) Buy this book http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
2) If you need more than 2 seats a V8V won't suit and a 911 is a better shout, unless you want to upsize to a DB9, which is 2+ very small 2.
3) Mines never broken down and they are generally very reliable, however servicing is 10k / 1 year rather than 20k/ 2 years as on 997's

Welcome, very much a personal taste thing, plus Porsche are not necessarily bullet proof, with some very expensive engine repairs possible, which you may know about. My mate bought a band new 911 just 18 months ago. He no longer has it due to the amount of problems he experienced.

Anyway, back to Aston. Beautiful cars with a massive sense of occasion to drive, very friendly reception from others because the cars are admired so much.

There is a link to a book on everything you want to now about Astons above, I suggest that's a few quid well spent to tell you all you need to know.

Major problems are not common, with a very reliable engine and running gear. The weak spot is the clutch but it depends upon how it has been driven so any with that mileage on, check it. A car with that mileage on should be settled and sorted by now, check history and general condition. Many new cars experience minor faults around fit and fixtures, due to the hand assembly nature of the car, but they should all have been addressed in your car.

Many on here experience no problems at all. My own experience was a lot of very minor issues during the first three years, all sorted. I use it as a daily driver like many on here. They are not highly strung cars like Italian exotica, and can take a hammering.

They take a little getting used to with the right hand side fly off handbrake, so have more than 1 test drive as the first one can be misleading.

Get stuck into the showrooms, find the right car and enjoy. Her face will light up every time she drives it, especially as the cars are so exclusive! Best if luck.

If it's with a dealer, you could post a link here - you never know, someone might know it smile

in my experience the cars benefit from being driven regularly, rather than becoming garage queens. So dont be put off buying one with some miles on it and dont be put off using it on a near-daily basis

Thanks guys that's nice to know. I was going down the porsche route but on the basis there seems to be a fair few engine issues that happen without warning I was getting abit skittish. The Aston is by far the better looking with what I call grrrr factor ( you know that feeling when you open the garage door and your looking at the nose of the car and you find yerself going GRRRRR in a Percy kinda way) maybe that's just me but that's how I always felt opening the door to my Tuscan.
