Quick tyre question
Discussion
Ok, I ask because I like to do car trackdays when it's going to be wet or bloody freezing as I book bike ones when there's good weather forecast. I've previously only used road tyres anyway but was wondering whether to shell out for track tyres now the MX5 is no longer going to be doing duty as an everyday car too. Are 595s considered to be one of the better track tyres for a wet track? I've heard they're not as good as stuff like 888s in the dry but are a little better in the wet. Any truth in that?
If you are driving at high speed you will aquaplane regardless of the tyre over standing water. R888 grip up well in the wet, much better than the T1R road tyre from the same make. Unfair to compare to other tyres, but I've experience of both those on the same car, same conditions, same day.
I've got T1Rs on at the moment. They're alright on the road but absolutely hopeless on a dry track. That said, on wet tracks they seem to cling on better, just on the basis that track-tyred cars that were quicker than me in the dry are often slower if it starts raining. That may also be because a lot of people seem to poo their pants when the heavens open and go round at 20mph if they even go out at all
