Hi there,

I am recently the new owner of an amazing Tamora, having previously had a Chimaera 450, but I have a question I don't seem to be able to find the answer to regarding the cooling fans.

I have upgraded all the connections to improve waterproofing, and the fans cut in correctly when temp reaches 92 / 98 degrees, however when I park up and turn the engine off, the fans cut out straight away. Is this correct or should they keep running until the temp drops?

Can't work out if the car simply isn't hot enough to warrant them running on, or if there is an issue. I'm just worried that if the fans are running with the engine on, that when I switch her off the temp will continue to rise doing some damage?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Mine turn off when you take the key out, but work with electrics on.

No - they switch off when you turn the engine off and will start again when you start the engine (if the temp is still high enough). Never harmed my car in the last 5 years don't worry about it.

As soon as you stop the engine the water isn't being pumped around anyway, so all the fans would be doing would be cooling the water in the radiator.

Wouldn't have thought it would be able to get hotter once the engines off either now I think about it, as 'energy can't be created from nothing', so as there's no more combusting, no more heat being created ...... Maybe.

Thank you very much for your input.

I only notice it because my daily driver the fans will continue long after the engine has been switched off, but if it is normal then I'll just stop worrying!

In all the time i have owned mine i have always left the engine running until the fans cut out again i.e less than 92 deg before switching off, if required.

No it gets hotter if your fans have been on as its called heat soak. Plug your laptop in and watch the heat rise when you've turned off to see it happen.

Ok so, I know i'm being really dense here, but you are saying that the temperature does in fact continue to rise after the engine is switched off due to heat soak ? Or that if the fans were to continue to run after the engine was switched off, that the temperature would continue to rise?

With the engine going and the fans called into play to cool things down the temp should fall.

If you turn your engine off the water gets hotter from the metal etc and raises the temp.

Obviously this soon reverses when no more heat is created by combustion.

The fans only cool moving water so no requirement for them to work when the engine is off.

In my griff when I switch off I leave the fans running for the two minutes it takes me to put the roof back on. I'm lucky in that mine has a override switch so I can leave the fans running when in traffic if I choose to. Even so, I always do the above even though I probably don't really need to!

I'm also inclined to keep the engine running until the fans stop running.

The reason the water heats after engine the stops is that the water is not the hotest part of the engine (e.g. exhaust!). As soon as you stop the water cooling from the rad that heat brings the water temp up. You are not generating energy, just transferring it from the hottest parts of the engine.

Being a bit paranoid I'll pop the bonnet as well once stopped while putting the roof on just to let the heat out but that is just me!

Rob

P.S. there are at least some cars out there with the fans permenantly powered from factory unlike my Griff.

On returning home I usually lift the bonnet on the Tam and switch the fans on via the bi-pass switch I installed. It's mainly to help disparate the heat soak out whilst I'm putting the roof back on or fannying around getting the crap out of the car.

Just my 2 cents: isn't it useless to let the fans cool down the water temperature in the radiator since water pump is off when engine is off ? I mean there is no circulation and no cooling of the hot engine areas anymore.
I think this would only make sense whith an electric water pump ?
