Gelcoat stained, advice needed.

I'm off to trial this Bayliner 185 tomorrow. Described as mint with the only fault being the gelcoat is stained.
The boat is 5 yrs old.





Does it look excessive for the age? Is it easy to remove without any damage?

Muriatic acid (50% Hydrochloric) will likely remove it.

3M do gel coat rubbing compounds, a wool mop head will make application/polishing easier.

This type of staining is quite normal. This stuff (Star Brite Hull Cleaner) contains oxalic acid, which is what you need for this. But it at a boat chandlers for a tenner. Should come up like new.

Just buy a tub of Oxalic acid off Amazon. Dilute 1 small plastic cup to 1 gallon of water, and wipe on with a sponge and watch the stain vanish.
All the various expensive boat treatments for stain removal contain Oxalic acid.

Any of the above will work a treat, lt may take a few goes but should come out.

Mix the oxalic acid with some wallpaper paste, this will prevent the ñeat acid running straight off before it has had chance to work on any heavily stained area.

Use the starbrite, just done a a hunter 707 this afternoon. I used half a mug full on 24ft boat took me 10mins to do and it was worse than the Bayliner. Better to decant into a spray gun and spray on at close range, watch the eyes if windy.
