I am eating pretty clean seven days a week, have gained muscle in the past 5 months and am quite strong but my BF % is still too high and I lack definition. The only thing I can now point my finger at is that I drink at the weekend - Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Maybe the odd Sunday lunch.

Drinks are gin, white wine, Campari and diet lemonade.

To be honest, if I try to cut out all booze I will probably fail. However, I am wondering whether there is a less fattening approach. Or is it the case that unless I DO cut out alcohol completely I will never get my BF down?

booze = sugar.

Work out how much you are drinking, the calories for each one and take that off your daily "allowance"... If you are taking in 1000 calories of booze a day on the Friday/Saturday/Sunday, but not compensating with a reduced food calorie intake, then you are gonna be too high.

The nature of converting sugar to alcohol in a less than perfect way, means there are always residual sugar calories present in alcoholic drinks, as well as alcohol itself being calorific. Alcohol is 7kcals/g, sugar 4kcals/g.

The lowest calorie alcoholic drinks are white spirits - vodka, gin, rum. Anything else is basically loaded as much as any junk food.

If you want a sub 10% BF, you have to stop drinking completely. All these models and actors who have a 6-pack, at least in time for the photoshoot/movie will have stopped drinking for however long it takes.

I've been hovering around 11-13% BF for the past 5 years or so because I like to drink 20-30 units a week. I've had a 6-pack, but I decided prefer to drink a 6-pack more than I do merely owning a 6-pack...

There's looking good and then there's the indulgence sacrifice it takes, so you have to ask yourself how much you really want it.

A lot of people assume that the calories in booze come from sugar, they don't. Ethanol (alcohol) is very calorific in its own right.

Vodka, soda water and lemon is the best I've been able to come up with, very few calories in that.

Except most low calorie mixers taste disgusting. Fever Tree low sugar is by far the nicest, but I'm sure it still contains sugar.

The nicest diet drink I've been able to come up with is vodka, diet ginger beer, and the juice of half a lime.

You need the lime to cut the sickliness of diet drinks. Limes contain a lot of vitamin C so count as 'healthy'.

I am pondering gin and slim tonight as it happens.

Goldblum, I am already running 5 mornings per week. Or were you suggesting running instead of having a drink? Running WHILST having a drink would be at best impractical and probably a poor idea from a health and safety perspective.

In all seriousness, I seriously think alcohol is the main problem in my diet. But as mention above, at the weekend it would be difficult to give up. What's needed is a legal low-calorie alternative to alcohol.

Yep, not a good idea.

In the end I gave up booze...but I kept at under 10% bodyfat, more or less, for about 20 years whilst running 20-30 miles per week. In the end I figured I was more addicted to the endorphins than the alcohol so it was easy just to stop. smile

If you like a drink, you like a drink...to get movement now you might consider giving up.

A 70cl bottle of whiskey contains around 1700kcals.

When I want a drink I just tend to stick to the above mixed with ice or water (not the whole bottle though).

AFAIK a pint is around 200 kcalories, a clear spirit around 50 per single measure and diet drinks are almost calorie free.

Quadruple Gin and Diet Tonics all round wink

If you really can't or don't want to cut it out, read a little on health effects - e.g. click.
Alcohol is not your friend when trying to get lean.

Yep. Alcopops and fortified wines are your calorific enemy.

The same rule for "artificial" drinks applies to artificial and processes foods - if it tastes good, it's either high in sugar or high in sat fats, either way, calorific.

You (I) can cut 12% to 9% BF in 1 month just if you cut drinkingm if the rest of your diet and exercise is sound. But no drinking for a month, feck that'll be boring! I blame my Uni induction to drugs and acquiring a psychological taste for getting mullered.
