Bought some lasagne sheets from waitrose today.

They had two choices:

Waitrose essential lasagne 71p

Waitrose essential egg lasagne 98p

The nutrition value for the calories varies massively though:

Per 2 sheets of lasagne = 280 calories
Per 2 sheets of egg lasagne = 168 calories

Looking at the ingredients, the only difference I can see is that one has egg and one doesn't.

Why is there such a difference in calories?

Lasagne ingredients :
Durum Wheat Semolina, Pasteurised Free Range Egg (17%)

Egg Lasagne ingredients :
Durum Wheat Semolina, Whole Egg (19%).

I can only think that the "pasteurised free range egg" is mainly egg white, and the difference is due to the fat content in egg yolk.

EDITED: found the ingredients online smile

Without the egg, they needed to use more fat of some sort instead?
that sounds like a logical conclusion to draw in the absence of the ingredient list

Ok, digging a little deeper I get confused even more.

Here is the nutrition for the lasagne without egg:

http://m.waitrose.com/mt/www.waitrose.com/webapp/w...

It shows that per 100g, the calories is 355

Here is the nutrition for the lasagne with egg:

http://m.waitrose.com/mt/www.waitrose.com/shop/Pro...

This shows that per 100g the calories is 368.

So now my question is:

How can the per 100g calories be more on one type, but the calories per 2 sheets is considerably more on the other?

This makes no sense to me!

To add:
If you look at the ingredients, there is no additional thing added to the non egg lasagne to replace the egg!

ETA: should I write to waitrose?

1) look at my edited post above
2) the calories per 100g is probably cooked weight, which will be mostly water.

Different sheet thickness (and therefore weight, volume and calories)?
