Clarkson said last night that the Holden with the 5.7 V8 Corvette engine was doing 1500 RPM at 70MPH. My Corvette does 1850.... Is he lying or is there something wrong with my car!

I get about 40-42mph per 1000revs in 6th, so by my calculator that means 1660-1750 rpm for 70mph.

I'd doubt that the Holden has a lower 6th than the 'vette, so probably he's misread the tach....

I *think* my Z06 is 1500rpm at 60mph in 6th... my partner calls it cruising speed as the engine noise completely disappears and it just feels like you're cruising at 30,000ft :-)

I taped the show and watched it today. It was actually James May who was singing the praises of the Monaro doing 60mph (not 70mph) at 1500rpm. They showed the dials, so one must assume they were accurate.

If you want to check the gearing on your car, this site should help:

From reading various forums, the Holden does have shorter gearing than the Vette.

1500RPM = 75MPH in 6th in my C5, it could usefully be lower.

My HSV does 60 at 1500 rpm

Its down to the combination of gear box and ratio of the rear diff.

That'll be in 5th and not 6th I presume.

Yeah, on a big enough hill 6200 would be around 300mph in 6th.
