Common problem on Mercedes from around '99 through to mid 2000s. Often put down to the accountants getting involved and use of cheap and poor quality steel from Russia and China.
That said, even the aluminium W215 CLs are prone to corrosion. Mine started bubbling in the front of the rear arches, lower door panels and around the headlights and it was approx six years old! MB repaired for free under warranty and also fixed major problem area at the bottom of the C pillar. The only panels they didn't need to respray were the bootlid, roof and possibly the bonnet (can't remember if that is plastic or not).

I thought it was due to the switch to water-based paints.
Paint wasn't adhering the metal properly.
I had a 99 C43 that went this way. Although oddly enough the 2000 one was perfect. Had a look at my neighbour's 51 plate C180 yesterday and it was shocking - arches, doors, tailgate all shot

You may well be right as I'm only going by the comments from the dealership and also the body shop MB sent the car to.
The problem seem to have gone now as our 2007 GL has no issues with corrosion and when talking to the bodyshop before getting a W216 CL, they said they hadn't seen any of those except for accident damage.

I don't know that for a fact, it's just a theory I heard. The problem seem to have gone now as our 2007 GL has no issues with corrosion and when talking to the bodyshop before getting a W216 CL, they said they hadn't seen any of those except for accident damage.
And yes problem seems to have gone. My 2005 E Class is fine.
