Bye Bye to the cat!!
Discussion
I have been pondering the option of removing the main cat for a while now, and have spoken to people some say do it and others say don't.
I have spoken to my friendly MOT tester and he has assured me that a de-catted Chimaera has the same emissions as a 1600 zetec focus (who would have thunk that!)
.
The battle has been the noise issue, is it going to be too loud, as the pre cats are long gone as is any form of silencing. Well the result of the battle is! The cat lost
I will be using an original "y" piece to experiment with, and then when I have saved up some Clive F tokens then I will get one.
I am also thinking about modifying the tail pipes to a slightly more "aggressive" look.
All the work (including the G.G Pros) will be done before "Thunder in the Tunnels 10" at the end of the month.

Don't hesitate to take it out. My Chim sounds much nicer/throatier with them out (keeping original exhaust), although didn't really notice any difference in performance.
Interestingly though, I have just sold the car and the buyer wanted the original back in, so I've an ACT decat Y piece in the garage awaiting fitting to something else in due course :-)

There are many opinions on this and as you know a lot boils down to individual taste. However, I removed my pre-cats, main cat and its sleeved. It is very loud. It sounds great from 2500-3000rpm and above, but a bit of a 'loose' fart sound below, with a bit of spattering for good measure. I was considering adding some semi-sleeved cheery bomb style silencers, just to remove a little of the higher frequency sound below 3k, but not having too much of an impact above that. On the upside, it pops and bangs even when I change gear now. On the downside, it is uber loud around town. I have however had several police vehicles sat behind me without issue so far (mainly because I have avoided any acceleration/ overrun).
For short journeys it is great, but long journeys with the windows open (especially around town/ close to the motorway barrier etc) it gets a little wearing, which is why I was thinking of a compromise.
This seller on Ebay offered me a paid of stainless semi-sleeved silencers made to order for about £100 delivered or theirs the insert silencers for track days. I just haven't got around to doing anything about it at the moment.

If it was too loud then I was going to go back to normal and only use the de cat for events etc, bearing in mind I use it mast days for work and I finish at midnight, I either upset the neighbours, buy a bike or make/buy some trackday type silencers. The only problem with the silencers is they not fit over soon to be made tail pipes,(no they aren't going to be 100mm drainpipes before people object) they will be 60-65mm but made in such a way they will look the nuts (hopefully).
But i'm part deaf(I wasn't before the tiv) and Shelly has ear defenders so whats to worry about I just hope it meets my expectations and some of you like the end result.

Just buy a second hand Y-piece and then you can swap it back if you don't like it...But i'm part deaf(I wasn't before the tiv) and Shelly has ear defenders so whats to worry about I just hope it meets my expectations and some of you like the end result.

I have similar on my Cerb the difference is the inlet outlet pipes are 2.5" & the cherry bombs are approx 4" Dia. though they may be a bit shorter than the E bay items They are quite loud, can upload a short vid if you want some idea, the Cerb V8 is a different sound.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111109936099?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&clk_rvr_id=518853484261&afsrc=1

I'd like to hear it!
The most popular set up amongst track dayers, as far as I can tell, is decat with standard exhaust. That keeps you under or close to track noise limits.
A 400 will be quieter than a 500 anyway, and my decatted 500 with standard exhaust and Clive Y piece was 105.8 decibels last week at Snetterton and 102 at Cadwell today. So loud, but not too loud. Sounded great to me all the way there and back and for two hours at 8mpg (ie at full chat, mainly 5000 rpm in 3rd and 4th) on track.
There must be loads of owners in Sussexshire, Kentshire or Surreyshire with cars you could listen to.......just ask and ye shall receive. I am pretty sure Phazed has a similar set up to mine, for example.

Cheers, have applied to join the group!Well there is no going back now (not with that y piece anyway).
I drove into the workshop and 3 hours later it was done.
If I have caused Earthquakes in the Sussex and Kent area then I am sorry.
Holy Crap, I started her up, and my oppo at work, fell of his chair, it was that un-expected.
I checked round the flanges and the joint for the system for leaks and with your head buried in the engine bay it did not seem overly loud, but.... as I walked closer to the rear I then noticed the noise.
It did not seem overly agricultural, much to my surprise, and just sounded loud.
I have just driven home and as its late decided not to give it the beans, but gentle throttle up to about 3000rpm and I could feel the vibration through the floor, I then came to a unpopulated stretch of road and gave it some and the noise, Oh the noise from 3000rpm to 5000rpm was magnificent, it really barked, a bit like the speed 6 engine but with the V8 growl, I have never a heard noise like it. She has always popped and banged on over-run but this was just in a different league, it used to be like gun fire, now is truly cannon fire. honestly the fisrt explosion and I nearly wet myself.
I will have to wind her up a little in the morning at an appropriate hour.
I think I will have to adjust to the differences, as I was used to the "old" noise and she sounds and feels completely different.
If I can work out to upload onto youtube then I will record and post it for you all to hear, if not you will have to wait till Thunder in the tunnels, and believe me I am bringing the thunder.
Thanks to all for the comments and advice, and I am sorry if I ignored most of it, but I am male.
But she is LOUD by name, and now, LOUD by nature.

Thanks again
Jamie

Have a look at my (not so good) profile pic to see the result of my fully de-catted Chim
Awesome. I've often wondered if I get flames out the back of mine...

is that sleeved as well, She always banged very well and I did wonder if there would be flames without the cat.
