Hi guys,

I have a '98 Chimaera 400.

I topped up oil recently and the car started to stall once in a while when accelerator is not pressed eg. when slowing down at a junction or when clutch pressed or in neutral gear. This happens only when the car heats up. Never happened when cold.

The strange part is that the issue gets magically fixed/sovled/healed by switching off the engine completely with the key and removing the key from ignition. Then restarting the engine and everything work flawlessly until I park the car at home go to bed and then in the morning sometimes it happens again.

I read here it could be many causes. Do you think this is something to do with the electronics, because I assume switching off and then back on would not help so much if it was a hardware problem?

Another thing - what is the sound of the engine if one or more cylinders are not firing? I heard my car at some point work like a subaru v6 instead of a v8 for a few days... it is OK now, however.

I am planning my visit to the mechanic to check it out propely soon. I would like to hear your opinions on the matter too. Also opinion whether I have explained the problem clearly so that I can clearly explain this to the mechanic too smile I am not real English after all smile

Regards
Andy

Stepper Motor. Replace it. If you leave it it'll begin stalling immediately after starting (again...only when hot). If I may make another suggestion - get a good one rather than a cheap ebay copy thing or you'll end up replacing them every year!

I'd suggest you start with checking the operation of and cleaning the stepper motor. It's primary function is to control the idle by allowing air into the inlet tract..

If it sticks you'll either have too much air or not enough - one giving you a high idle, the other causing it to cut out..
