Mk6 fiesta - anything to avoid?

Hi everyone,
A family member is looking at these as a first car. We are looking at a 2003-2004 due to the budget available. Does anyone know if there are any buying essentials we need to know? How do the various engines compare to each other? I've heard the 1.25 petrol is good/powerful for size/economical whereas the 1.3 is a bit of a dog. Is there any truth in that? I have found a nice looking 1.3 (albeit advertised as a 1.2) fairly local.

ive owned a 2003 1.3 8valve for 5 years now and the only problems ive had are a shot clutch (however, i think thats my fault as i came from driving a 380bhp skyline, and drove the poor little fiesta rather hard), and the alternator packed in last year (replaced myself with a second hand one from a scrappys at a total cost of £35). great on fuel, cheap insurance, however, some may find it a little lacking in the power department, personally, i have a lot of fun throwing it around...
