Hello all, two posts in one here - the main topic being MMC brakes - have searched all previous posts in relation to this but am still at a loss as to how to identify whether or not my 'liz has them. It's a 98 S reg standard spec with 71k on the clock. Other than the 'are they shiny/rusty' test I don't know how to ascertain what type they are. I'm gonna need to replace pads soon and don't want to pay Lotus premium proices unless I have to!!!

The discs do get a bit of rust residue on them when it's been standing - but not as much as other vehicles i've owned???

Also any PH' ers in Heathfield??? - in particular the Azure blue S2 I waved out of a parking space the other day if you are

Sounds a bit late to have MMCs to me - mine is a 98 S and has steel discs.

Tests:

Put a magnet on the disc, if it falls off, they're MMC

Is there any rust aound the edges of the disc, if not, they're MMC

Does the disc look shiny and silver like any other car disc? If they look dull, they're MMC.

Is the performance shocking in the wet, ocassionally nothing happening when you stand on the pedal?

Do you get brake squell *all* the time?

Do they look almost completely new with very little in the way of a lip ?

If the answer is yes to all of them then chances are you have MMC's

According to the literature they stopped putting them on cars in June 98. If yours was a very early S there is a chanec that the car stodd for a few months before it was sold but seems unlikely ?

They look shiny

They have a little rust around the edges

They don't squeal very much

They perform the same in the wet as in the dry

This woud suggest that they are not MMC - However I will try the definitive magnet test to make sure. Thanks chaps - info much appreciated. I'm not really fussed about amazing performance, so is there any reason not to go for the mintex jobbies that are on Ebay regularly???

Sounds like steel disks to me - how many miles have they done on a ste of pads? MMCs last for ages ~40k miles I believe.

Don't know about Mintex pads - had a set on my Peugeot and they were OK. The consensus seems to be to use either EBC Green Stuff (cheaper option but require warming up a bit) or Pagid RS14s or RS42s (about £160 per set) - can someone else explain the difference between the two?

Green Stuff - cheap but you can go through them at a rate of knots if you use the brakes alot, some people have been through a set at one track day.

Pagid RS4-2 - for fast road/track days and they last forever! good feel progressive braking and I haven't had any fade off them.

Pagid RS 14 - for track day/racing and they squeel like a pig!

Thought of another tell-tale ... MMC's don't get that hot. After a sensible drive to work I would be able to touch my disks, whereas with steel ones it would be ill advised

Thanks for the input chaps - will definitely try the magnet test to get a definitive answer as my ability to judge the performance of the brakes in different conditions etc is not excellent.

I know the consensus on here is for really hi-spec performance brakes (pagid EBC etc), but the plain truth is that I am not a sufficiently experienced driver to be able to detect the difference!!!
As my Lotus ownership continues and I develop my driving skills i've no doubt my needs for such 'performance' parts will grow. However at the moment just plain old standard stoppers will do nicely!

Hiya Cap'n,
Glad to see you're loving the 'liz still mate. Keeping my eyes peeled around TW area in case I see you. Wave if you see the black n gold beast, it'll likely as not be me!
I think the common concensus on the Pagid RS4-2's is not particularly that they are performance upgrades (so to speak), rather that they are excellent replacements from the standard fit ones when the time comes. When mine go (think this will be next year) I'll be sticking a set of these on because from what I've read they give best overall performance for the car on road (and for occasional track use if you plan on that).
Cheers, Tim

Howdy Mr Works - always keepin an eye out for the beast in Tunny wells, but not seen you yet!

I know what you're saying about the Pagid's and lets face it with those non-servo-assisted brakes the Liz needs all the help it can get to stop properly, but i'm not mad about upgrades - just want things that'll do what they're needed to - plus no point spunking £160 on pads when I don't drive the car in a manner that merits it!!! (okay okay - so i'm a tight arse )
