Should funerals come out of your annual leave?

Or is down to the employers discretion?

Down to employers discretion.

Discretion (if a decent manager but they don't have to!) if not annual leave.

Also depends if close relative or not, usually if close family a good employer will give you a day compassionate leave

Depends on your relationship to yourself with my company and also Line managers discretion.

Got compassionate leave for Uncles funeral.

Another Uncle died a few years later had to take A/L (different line manager).

At our place HR support it as compassionate leave if a close friend / relative.

There's no law which requires an employer to grant Compassionate Leave. There's actually no law which requires an employer to grant Annual Leave, either, AFAIK!

If its a total stanger then its your own time

Why should the employer pay you to attend a funeral?

It's a personal matter therefore should come out of annual leave.

When my mum died last year my company gave me 5 days off without any discount from my annual leave.
Hence now I don't mind if they need a favour from me.

We treat it very much on a case by case basis

Generally people will get the day off, there are some who are so so unlucky and have had 3 Aunties, 2 Cousins and 5 Nans die in a year, they take it as A/L
