Anyone done this or able to recommend any nice discreet connectors?

I've found some stuff that sits on the skirting, but as I'm fitting new and have the tools to machine whatever is necessary out of the skirting I'd like to recess some RCA (?) sockets into the wood and have them fixed from behind with the wires then connected.

Does anyone know of anywhere that sells suitable connectors or is it going to be a case of buying something generic and making it fit?

I could probably wedge and glue the plugs in from the front and put a small recess in the wall to accommodate the rear if necessary, but I can't be the first person to want to do this, so there must be something available off the shelf, surely.

Yeah, I've seen a few of these sorts of ones. Problem is they sit on the skirting and are very visible. If they were fitted behind the skirting with the plugs sitting in a hole then they'd be much better from an aesthetic point of view. With that one I could make it fit behind, but it would be a pain with the router, compared with drilling a hole for a plug designed to sit in the skirting.

Have a look at aca-apex.co.uk for ideas and possible supply.

I use them for my installs and they are great a little widgets that help with discrete installs.

Chat to Mike or Tandy if you need to talk to them.

Actually there are some on there that wouldn't be too hard to integrate, but they're £20 a pop, so not happening!

Will look at that website now....

The stuff on that website looks ok, not easy to fit though and pretty expensive.

Might just go with something like this and get the router out:

Or something like this:

Drill hole the correct size, feed cable through and hammer in tight to hole. Araldite or similar behind to hold it and a recess in the wall to accomodate the cable. Actually, I have 3 x 20m cables with those plugs on the end that would be great for this.

If your handy with tools and a soldering iron, they may seem expensive.

To those who are not, or don't have the time on installs they are great.

Hope it gives you a few ideas at least.

Yeah, I agree. I've already gone way overbudget on the install, so £100 on some little sockets isn't going to go down too well I don't think. If I drill some practice holes for size I think I'll be able to wedge/glue the plugs into the skirting. Shame there isn't something designed specifically for a nice neat install, but I'm sure it won't take too long to bodge something together.

There should be something to suit on E-bay or Amazon. Good selection of plate finishes and binding posts; not too expensive.

why don't you route the skirting board so the RCA's come out vertical and flush with the wall?

If you've already spent a lot on an install, then spending £100 more to finish the job off properly is chicken feed. There's no point bodging it at the last minute. I can promise you that in the years to come it'll annoy you far more than spending a bit of money now will.

Ask me how I know that...

The Triax range of snap-in grid modules are a good option, lots of third party suppliers do smart metal faceplates for them as well. Not the cheapest at £5 - £25 per plate subject to finish and module but very tidy aesthetically.

Not sure why you' re looking at RCA connections as you want 4mm speaker sockets, one pair for each speaker unless bi-wiring or bi-amping in which case two pair per speaker.
