There was a guy in New Zealand who got his dealer to fit a different SatNav. He even had it so you could get it to open and close. We never found out all the details though.

The issues are it is linked into the fibre optics. Its linked to the radio - so it shuts off the radio volume when speaking, and it integrates to open / close. That's before you get to taking the whole dash apart to get at everything.

Buy a TomTom!!!

Pourquoi?

The chap you talked to said the unit was a bespoke Mercedes item, so the answer to your question is "in a Mercedes" or alternatively if you meant "where can I buy one off the shelf" the answer is "nowhere".

Tom Tom make some of the best units on the market. But all the big name aftermarket systems are pretty good these days so it often comes down to personal preference (I found the Garmin units a pain in the arse to use and not as intuitive as Tom Toms. YMMV).

If you search on here there has been a thread that linked to someone fitting an aftermarket satnav into the slot where the Volvo unit goes in an AM. But I don't think the link ever showed the conclusion of the operation.

This link appeared in a thread either here on another forum which i bookmarked.

Its in german but easy enough to follow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGZw_eJAdmc

Earlier in the year I spoke to a company in london who have done it in two different ways:

1) replace exisintg sceen with a new alpine touch screen - HDD replaces current location of Aston module. But you cant use the joystick to control it. (remote control available for £100)
2) Replace existing swivel screen with a fixed double din SatNav and create a permanent housing which is in the open fixed position. Similar to BMW double cowl style dashs.

Cost about £2,500 all in for either option if memory serves right (but including a reverse camera being fitted also). So could be done with any given satnav from Merc potentially?

If you want the contact details, let me know. Only reason I didnt go ahead is that I am thinking of changing up soon to SP10 or S.

But checkout Youtube for the this type of mod - lots of people installing Ipad minis as their screens and connecting it to the sound system. full touch screen controls etc... but the Aston optics are a pain from what I have heard to do this right. US/Canadian company apparently has cracked it - but I cant find any info on it - chinese whispers i guess.

let me know if you do move on this project.

Tbh even in the X5 with its more advanced? Sat nav I still prefer the TomTom. I've never come across ANY proprietary Sat nav system that is as good as the TomTom. smile

askjockman.com is correct I've had too many cars with sat nav built in not one comes close to my old Tom Tom frown
Problem is by the time the car gets to market the sat nav is out of date

Every time you post up a hoon I know for a fact that it is an abridged route, sanitised no doubt by Kay, bearing no resemblance whatsoever to the actual roads driven !!! biggrin

I am just a newbee to the history of Aston Martin, but I think we both already drive the V8V2.

Unless there was an even earlier Vantage, the picture shows the first V8 Vantage.

Sorry about the 'trainspotting', but I believe this forum has a pride in precision.

It does indeed.

But the commonly accepted abbreviation for that car is the AMV8. tongue out

So V8V2 for the AMG car is probably more correct. wink

Now I may be wrong, but I'm sure the model line in your picture is called "V8" with the "Vantage" tag being added to denote an improved version as the model evolved over time. The "Vantage" tag has been added to a number of models down the years with the last one using this format, to be the DB7. Since, AM have chosen to use "Vantage" to name a model. Think of the V12 Vantage as a Vantage Vantage and you'll get what I mean.

It's a lot quicker than a DB9 too with better grip, handling and brakes. The torque from that engine is just awesome (an overused word but in this case appropriate). Still, I'm currently looking for another Aston to replace my C63, perhaps I'm getting old but outright performance isn't everything.
