In my head today it looked like the last day before the Autumn really set in, so thought I take my VX220 to work instead of my Golf and enjoy the last chances for roof off driving. New job, new commute, now mainly country lanes instead of A roads in to town.

Totally forgot I had a meeting this afternoon with other professionals off site.
Trying to get out of said car (roof now on), in a suit, without looking a complete tit is fairly unlikely tbh.

I'm now contemplating whether I should sell both next year and buy something as exhilerating, eye catching and quick, but which isn't quite such a spectacle getting in and out. Not sure what though... M3? Cayman?

Or get rid of the boring golf and buy a more exciting daily and keep the VX for proper drives/trackdays.

Absolutely - You may find that those the others were in fact a tad jealous?

Noone said anything, it's all me. lol

Golf+VX to a Merc \c\c63 AMG or a GTR would be an impressive if totally unaffordable move.

Wouldn't feel like a knob, would probably have a harder time justifying a new amg merc than an old vauxhall toy car to some of my clients. Saying that I got the must be paying you to much comments when I had a gtv, so who knows.

Keep the vx220, not much that will come close for the money.

IMO what a client wants to see is passion, not just an acceptable face in an acceptable suit in an acceptable car because if it's not acceptable enough for their mediocre world view you might not get their business (and they're usually the type of clients to whinge and pay late). I want to work with people who bring vitality and energy to a project, not someone who drives the car equivalent of a suit from Next because they think they're not doing it right if they don't.

Too much attention is paid to having the "right" car for your work.

Well unless it's a complete wreck, it really doesn't matter.

If someone turned up to our business in a VX220, I'd think "damn cool." A man that knows his cars.

Unless you're the MD of a company which just laid off half it's work-force and turn up in a 458 I don't see why you'd ever feel a nob for turning up in a nice car.

I must admit, it was a tad awkward recently when we had a work social recently and I (trainee accountant) hopped out of my Z4 coupe when the 3 senior managers I report to arrived in a 318i, 1.4 clio and old Freelander.

Admittedly, they all have nice houses and kids etc but it did draw a few comment nonetheless.

I have absolutely no clue what car most of my business contacts drive. I meet them in reception, I don't lie in wait for them in the carpark.
Of the ones I do know, I judge the guy in the black Golf TDI far worse than the one in the Elise.

Errrmmm, aren't you after a 3 series? While I have one, a 335d Touring, it's probably the model of car that is most despised. I'd say the Cayman is far less tw4ttish.

Likewise.

To the disappointment of people who do care, most people don't have any interest in what other people drive.

Lol I have the same car, started new job a couple of months ago - already had a few comments about people wanting to swap with their sheds, my boss drives a 10year old fiesta, but like you say wife/kids/house etc so its all relative - I'm just making the most of it before I resort to the bargain basement thread hehe
